Fox's Global Strategy Doesn't Impress

Mexico assumed the presidency of the U.N. Security Council this week and Mexican President Vicente Fox apparently thought it appropriate to reiterate his rhetoric against the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

For those who had hoped Sept. 11 would advance North American solidarity, Mr. Fox's decision to side with the Quai d'Orsay has been a disappointment. The breach between Mexico and the U.S. could widen even further if Mr. Fox stays on the foreign-policy tack he has adopted.

We need to build a 20 foot-high wall across our southern border and cover it with razor wire.

One can't ignore GW's inability to pick his friends and read hearts and souls. Putin and Fox are two examples of gross mis-judgements. Judgements like these two could be very dangerous.

Other than that he's doing a great job.

Fox's Global Strategy Doesn't Impress

I am shocked and appalled by this criticism of Fox by the Wall Street Journal, a fellow conservative media outlet.

In its TV coverage of the global war on terrorism and Iraq, I feel that Fox has been doing an outstanding job, and that Brit Hume is one of the greatest . . .

What? The column isn't about Fox News? It's about Mexican President Vicente Fox?

Never mind.

To be effective, I'd use land mines as a supplement.

Fox has really blown it. He came into office hoping to establish a partnership with the US that would result in open borders and an economic merging of the two countries, on terms favorable to Mexico, of course.

And he had a very good shot at it, in that GW Bush was looking for the same kind of partnership with Fox and Mexico, for his own reasons.

But being partners is about more than just easy access to work permits. If you are partners, in a real sense, you do not back your partners enemies in war time.

In a way, it is understandable that there is a visceral hatred for Bush among leftists, and among those governments ruled by the left. And although Fox comes out of Mexico's PAN party, which tends to be conservative in Mexican terms, he does not command a clear majority, and does not want to draw fire from the left. And, his foreign minister is a leftist from way back. Nevertheless, in terms of Fox's ambitions, Bush was the best friend Fox was ever going to have. By leaving GW high and dry, Fox has gone from having a friend in the White House that would pick up the phone whenever he calls, to having to wait days for a call-back.

For those of us who want to see a little more control on the border, this is actually good news.

It would be great that if in the long run he was right. But right now it looks like he needs to find some new friends, from Eastern Europe perhaps.

Fox should go back to the Coca Cola Company. The only thing he has done for his country is to expedite their emigration so Americans can support them. He is a failure as a leader, just like those before him.

While these events are very bad and will take time to repair, the fact that the mexican military and police have arrested and convicted a number of senior people for corruption and other crimes is the mark of a major change in Mexico. It is this cultural as much as jobs that will keep many people in Mexico.

Personally, I'm elated to see watch El Fox's antics. Like the Loony Left, the more he speaks, the more he reveals himself to being the henhouse variety of Fox, not the friend to the US he implies.
I was uncomfortable to see Bush cozy up to Fox (and Pooty-toot), but I have confidence in GW's ability to appear dim but think brilliant.
We will see at the end of the day......
