About all of us are borne of immigrants, that's not crap, it's true.

In other words: "move along, nothing to see here, everything is fine"

No. Not in other words. Those are the very words I want to use to a twit like this who thinks the government is responsible for heart attacks and strokes, and who, with a straight face, says that "I've had people who came here from Communist countries tell me they hadn't seen this much government."

You need a better messenger. This guy's a mess.

How many Iraqis start businesses, even with no laws to stop them?

Exactly. BTW, isn't it good to have a nation of laws? Not one run by a nut whose whim is the law.

At least here we can work to change bad laws.

That of course is a nice, comfy myth! What intrusive laws have we changed (reversed) anywhere in this country in the past, say, 20 years? How do you know that people can't change laws in other places? My whole argument here is that comparisons are good and useful, as much as they upset the chauvinists and the ignoramuses.

No, my parents and grandparents we also born here. Do you want to go back to the beginning of time, or when the immigrated to europe? And when they came here I seriousely doubt they bitched about how much better it was in the old country. If they had they should have been told to go back too.

I passed the forgetfulness of the woman. Sometimes the smallest incident, no matter what the importance to you or me, is the the tinder that lays base to further thought.

-- "I don't want to overthrow the government, start a civil war, protest in the streets or terrorize my fellow Americans. I just want my freedom back!"

My new tag line -tp-

At one point, - about five years ago, that tag line was much like the FR mission statement..

There's been a lot of 'ss' type activity here, since then.

To continue on, just what is the source of Iraq's wealth besides oil? How much of the incredible wealth of this country has gone into: 1. Saddam Hussein's personal bank accounts, his numerous gold-studded palaces, his sons' private sadistic agencies of enforcement, and 2: Armaments,
components for WMD, basic expenditures for "Regular Army" and extraordinary expenditures for Republican Guard, and private henchmen? How much is "left over" for all other purposes? And we have yet to touch the subject of his aiding abetting, training and paying off exponents of global terrorism.

The belligerent ignorance that you see here is what's truly sad! So why don't these immigrants want to assimilate? Why do arrivals from Communism make these unfavorable comparisons? Is there something to it? We don't want to know, we don't want to hear! Go back to Cuba! Randy Newman's caustic (satirical) song comes to mind:

We're rednecks, we're rednecks,
We don't know our a$$es from the holes in the ground"

I hear Liberty Post is the libertarian wing of FR. That seems to be where a few disgruntled FReepers, past and present, are.

Yes, our system is less than perfect-but it is more perfect than all the rest. Becoming more like "them", will sure as h*ll not be an improvement.

Not many, it's easier to stop bad ideas from becoming law than it is to overturn them once they do. But then again, a lot depends on citizen involvement. If all everyone does is sit at home, nothing will change for sure.

To answer your question about other countries... just looking at the English speaking ones like Britain and Canada, I'd say they're light years ahead of us in the big brother category. From what I understand you can't even buy a large bottle of aspirin in Britain anymore, only a few at a time. Is that the nanny state or what?

Where is the grass greener?

Unintended consequences it would seem.

Yea. Here's something for further thought:

I've had people who came here from Communist countries tell me they hadn't seen this much government.

Do you believe this bullshit?

I dunno. What does Milton Friedman say these days? Hong Kong? I am arguing that comparisons are useful and that while many things may be better here, some may be better elsewhere. And that seems to be a radical and unacceptable, politically incorrect notion here! (Enough!)

Why do arrivals from Communism make these unfavorable comparisons?

They don't. Fredinburg is lying.

You mean the Hong Kong that's controlled by the Red Chinese? Where everybody looks like Michael Jackson these days with surgical masks over their faces?

Yessirree. Hong Kong sounds like a fun place to be.

who came here from Communist countries tell me they hadn't seen this much government intrusion into the citizens' lives in their native lands

That excerpt was not part of the article, but a comment by a Freeper. I do not have any other source to disbelieve the remark made. Doesn't mean I agree with what those from Communist countries"in this case have said.

Well, -- I think a lot of it was quite intended.
FR made a big splash from the get go, and attracted a lot of wannabe 'control types'.
They eventually 'won', at the expense of loOseing their own credibility. -- Amusing as hell from the constitutional 'free republic' standpoint.
