SACRAMENTO (AP) - A plan to raise billions of dollars by imposing sales taxes on a myriad of services drew mixed reviews Wednesday during a hearing before a state Senate committee.

The idea, being pushed by Sen. Gilbert Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, the chairman of the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee, would be to extend the sales tax to thousands of services provided by businesses, ranging from gardeners and dry cleaners to attorneys and accountants.

Sure. Ditch Property tax, income tax, etc, etc, etc taxes and fees first.

What won't they do to drive productive business out of California? We need a liberation here from the tyranny of little minds....

Who want to drive self-starting entrepreneurs like me out of business before we've earned our first profit. Perhaps we should all apply for welfare. Let the liberals figure out where to get the revenue from then.

This will never pass. A revolt will first take place. Small business drives this economy and is responsible for a majority of taxes paid via payroll, propetry, sales tax, unsecured property tax etc. We are a service based economy in a lot of ways. I will have to lay of one to two people to make this work. Liberals go first. Conservatives will have to work harder. In addition, much of the proposed increase would be passed immediately to the consumer. This is a stupid no win proposal for the Dems.

Professional services businesses (marketing, accounting, consulting, lawyers, financial advisory, etc., etc.) have been hammered like nothing else in the past two years. Imposing a mandatory 7 1/4% price hike could be the last nail in the coffin.

On the other hand, it does make office space in Las Vegas seem mightily attractive...

c'mon guys; just tax everything; 5% on everything should help you a little...
but...if you're really serious; how bout a 25 cent/pack tortilla tax...

Sen. Gilbert Cedillo, D-Los Angeles

This is the fellow that US Marines ought to be taking aim at next.

Third rate law school degree. President of the biggest Mexican union in the US. Fellow traveler at the ALCU.

Well, I don't like all the taxes charged to consumers, but they do force plumbers, photographers, printers and other services to charge sales tax. Why not lawyers, accountants, etc?

Although perhaps there should be a cap on some of it, I mean, if you rack up huge legal bills the taxes alone will make up one big bill.
