There's considerable unnecessary confusion and debate on public policy issues that would be more intelligently discussed and resolved if we'd say what is actually meant rather than using euphemistic disguises.
The Grutter and Gratz vs. Bollinger cases before the United States Supreme challenge the University of Michigan's use of racial preferences for undergraduate and law school admissions.

Walter Williams is a national treasure. He understands the economic principles of our society better than any of my old economics professors in college did.
As for taking a dollar from one American and giving it to another, it's more like taking FOUR dollars from one american to give ONE dollar to another. Federal brokerage fee, don't ya know!
Walter is great separating the wheat from the chaff. However, this is another case of dealing with the logic of situations without considering their origins and impetus. The Communists have exploited existing divisions everywhere in order to exacerbate those divisions, increase or create animosity, and generate class warfare. They build straw-men so that they may be the champions of the "underclass". They have done that in this country, in the Mideast, Asia, Europe, Africa, and Central and South America.
A part of this creating of divisions is the welfare system to create tension between the rich (almost everyone who is successfully earning a living) and the poor. The civil rights laws and affirmative action create racial problems. Stringent environmental laws create confusion over values and make demons of businesses and all enjoying the fruits of their labors by driving a dreaded automobile.
Examine every bill or program backed by the liberals (the name they are hiding behind instead of Communists). No matter their stated intention, the practical results always end up crippling America in some way. Look at one of their earlier successes, Social Security. Social Security in its essence is forced savings, or at least it is presented as such. In reality, it is simply another tax to fill government coffers for more socialists programs. The other, unspoken, effect it has is it drains that money from private investment where it could be put to work to advance free enterprise. The goal and the aim, therefore, was to advance big government and shrink the private sector. The sales pitch, made during a great depression, was to take a little now to ensure a retirement income for the elderly.
That technique continues - make a bleeding heart sales pitch for some "helpless" constituency while, in reality, they increase government control, lessen individual accomplishment, and increase ennui and indolence among the populace. It is truly amazing that this country has survived the last sixty years.
I suppose we must deal with the red herring arguments to expose them for what they are but we should also comment on the real purpose behind them and the real effect they will have.
