Now that Martha Burk and her cronies have wasted a weekend -- make that a year -- protesting the trivial in Augusta, maybe they could come north to Indianapolis and decry the shortage of women revelers in the Indy 500 infield.

I kind of wish I was closer to Augusta - it would have been fun to walk around with a sign decrying how I'm not allowed to be a member because I'm a poor white man...

"Maybe what the feminist movement needs to do is take on some other issues. Homelessness would be one."

Well, so would foreign policy inasmuch as half of the population of the Moslem world not only can't vote, but can't show their faces on the street. But that might risk putting them on the same side of the issue as those horrible Republicans...naw, can't risk that. Let the Moslem women wait...

Good advice. Augusta is a non-issue. And Burk is clearly oblivious of the right to associate.

It's not that you're not "allowed" .. it's that you're not yet invited to join.

Only then will dues and fees become your issue.

LOL. I'm not allowed to be a member because I'm not a golfer. How discriminatory. It looks like a beautiful place for a picnic after all.

NOW lost their credibility when during Clintoon's sex scandals along with a couple of other congressional RATS scandals the NOW kept supporting these jokers. Further, the majority of the membership were lessies. As a woman, I say NO THANKS to their membership. They've got NOTHING I want to be associated with.

Her strategy was stupid. Her demonstrations were silly. Butshe isn't going away. She's targeting the corporations who's CEO's are members..and they're scared. I have several friends who work at AMEX, some fairly high-up, and Ken Chennault is going nuts with this. He's a minority, and AMEX markets heavily to women...so he can't stand that kind of publicity, that image. Yet, if he resigns, he looks "wussy"..like he was forced to do so. The thought is ( now that the tournament's over) that he's going to come out with a forceful statement AGAINST the policy, yet refuse to resign, saying that he wants to work from within to change the club. Since members aren't supposed to "diss" the Chairman...this will force Hootie to kick him out, which would make Chenault happy..he'd be a martyr, a hero...but bad PR for Hooties and Augusta...kicking out a black member. So, Hootie "won" the battle, but he lost the war....unless, UNLESS, there's a secret agreement to name a female member real soon....saving everyone's face...

Freepers, rather than waiting to see what happens with Estrada and Owen, we need to take the lead. That means presuring Senators, special interest groups, media organizations, etc. This thread is meant to be an ongoing effort to get this man confirmed. For too many years liberals have had their way on the courts. Now, President Bush is in a position to move the courts to the right. The election of '02 showed that the country is with the President. I think it's time to let Daschle, Hillary, and Pelosi know this is Bush country. Are you with me! Let's FREEP these people.

FWIW, I think the reason that Chenault and others kept their powder dry is that female member is already chosen. If they announced it before, it would have looked like Hootie was caving in to Martha, which would have pissed him off, and the female member would have detracted freom the tournament, which no one connected with AN wanted....it's the tournament which is important.....as to who it is, I haven't the foggiest, though I've been trying to figure out if Condi Rice or Maggie Thatchter play golf...

Sixty percent of college students are now women, which suggests it won't be long before some affirmative action extremists propose quotas to guarantee admissions equality for men.

Yeah, no doubt those advocating affirmative action would suddenly be considered 'extreme' were this to happen.

"NOW lost their credibility when during Clintoon's sex scandals..."

I totally agree. It clarified that their stated goals were not their real goals. Can you imagine them ignoring a major CEO who had played paddy-cakes with an intern... And then lied about it to the judicial system? I think not.

But my question is - why does NOW or any other woman's group need to have a focus if the issues directly related to women have been met? Homelessness is not a woman's issue; it’s a social issue. And there are many ways to get involved. Why does this need to be couched under the auspice of a woman's organization?
