but if my junior high school memories serve me correctly,....
I am sure the author is remembering exactly what he was taught, quite recently, in Junior High School...
I don't recall the Bill of Rights guaranteeing free speech ...

Yet that seems to be the disturbing interpretation preferred by those encouraging a backlash against some celebrities who have been outspoken opponents of the U.S.-led war against Iraq.
I had no idea the FreeRepublic had been elevated to the level of the US Congress.
People have always been held accountable for their actions including their statements. Of course they have a right to express themselves just as I have a right not to buy their product if I choose not to agree with them. That's my freedom of expression. If the Dixie Chicks' album sales have decreased by 50% it is because they pissed off 50% of their previous customer base. Shame on them for being so stupid. They failed to stop and consider that many of their fans were in the military, had relatives or friends in the military, or were in favor of the war for whatever reason.
They also underestimated the ability of the speed at which their actions would be communicated in spite of the left leaning media! In these days where we get much of our news via the internet or other non-conventional channels, Americans are once again beginning to talk to each other. Free communications between people is the single biggest threat to the socialist movement which has been crammed down our throats for the past decade. E-mail and forums are getting the word out and liberals can no longer hide behind the propaganda spewed by the leftist media.
So, Hollywood, think about what you say first because we are listening.
Times have changed, ya twit! (Not you, SL!) People want freedom and security backed by military power. They also understand that war is unpleasant but neccesary to keep the peace. They dont want diplo-games and patty-cake played with likes of Kofi-Anan when it comes to the security of our nation. No more bribing someone to be good. Read Clinton, North Korea and the reactors...
Besides, your protesting the war means nothing to most; your "Puking for Peace" and commie marches were just fronts for your hatred of Bush. Your complete silence during Bill Clintons Baltic theme park, shenaningans in Haiti and pummeling of Kosovo was deafening.
However, the public has the right to evaluate their august opinions and ACT accordingly.
I do object to political commentary of any kind when I have paid my way into an "entertainment" event. Just because the entertainers have an audience doesn't mean the audience should ever be subjected to the entertainer's poltiical views (particularly if the entertainer never finished high school or flunked out of Podunk State University).
Are these people just so dense that they cannot see the difference between "free speech" and the subsequent consequence of people disagreeing with your "free speech".
Tim Robbins speaking at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., carried several times on C-Span and clips from his speech shown on all the networks, is an example of free speech.
People strongly disagreeing with Robbins point of view, to the extent of refusing to place their money into his pocket by supporting his livelihood, is the marketplace.
Free speech is alive and well in this country. And, apparently, so is the free marketplace or these dufuses wouldn't be so hysterical.
Back to Jr high bozo.
The first amendment is one of the simplest and clearest; it begins:
"Congress shall make no law..."
Really really complicated, I know, but put that bong down and concentrate for a minute.

But you're right - in America, the government isn't limiting speech. The libs fail to remember, though, that with rights come responsibilities, and in this case it's the responsibility to take heat from those who disagree.
Facts:
1. Government is not taking anyone's right away. Period.
2. No one is saying that these jerks don't have free speech.
3. I also have the free speech to call them out on it. They aren't used to that and don't like being challenged.
4. Refusing to support celebrities like that is what makes this country great. It's business. I can certainly choose not to spend MY MONEY(REPEAT. MY MONEY. MY MONEY. Got it). to support celebrities like that. It's capitalism, and the most American principal of all.
