Why? Because the failure of State and the success of the Pentagon is abundantly clear to everyone.

I think the WH might say, "the historic failure of diplomacy to solve too many international problrms".

Recall, it was Pres. George W. Bush who said we would go it alone if no one else was willing.

Newt was not singling out SoS Powell; he was referring to the state of diplomacy worldwide and using our state department as an example.

SoS Powell carried out The Presidents instructions. GW was using the occasion of the UN stalemate on Iraq to make a powerful on the deteriorated state of the diplomatic service.

Rogue nations seem to have more realistic perceptions of the value of diplomacy.

" .. criticize Jack Kemp for critizing Newt Gingrich for criticizing Colin Powell."

I want to get on an criticize you for criticizing Jack for criticizing Newt for criticizing Colin, but only after criticizing Alan colmes for criticizing Hannity over criticizing the Dixie Chicks for criticizing President Bush.

... seriously, I *saw* the Newt speech and the followup questions. Newt *praised* Colin Powell and made it quite explicit that he had issues with the state dept. organization and bureaucrats and *not* with Colin Powell. IMHO he made his case well. In fact, he made the comment "why do people insist on personalizing things? This is not about personalities." It would be better to hear what he really has to say rather than go in circles re-interpreting (or misinterpreting) his views.

Well, look on the bright side: It means the GOP has multiple ideas to argue about.

The Democrats are down to no ideas, bad ideas (gephardt's socialized medicine), or merely screaming that GOP are a bunch of bigots (Howard Dean sunk that low *already* 18 months prior to the election).

"The worst thing about that debate, which I didn't discover until after the election, is that KEMP DIDN'T REHEARSE!! He thought he could just show up and wing it!!"

He didnt try (sigh) ... next time, get someone with fire in the belly.

I think Newt is being prompted by the Whitehouse to call for the reformation of State at this time.

Sorry...I disagree. I don't think the White House has anything to do with this.

The Bush administration is debating whether it is worth holding further nuclear talks with North Korea, following Pyongyang's vague threats to a U.S. envoy this week that it might test or even export nuclear weapons, senior U.S. officials said Friday.

The apparently fruitless two days of talks in Beijing have reopened a feud among President Bush's advisers over the value of negotiating with North Korea.

Hawks, including Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, argue that the outcome of the Beijing talks "show this whole approach is futile," said a senior U.S. official. -- Mercury News

Further evidence of futility in dealing with rogue dictators. Diplomacy needs a new tack. Career Foggy Bottoms need a reality check (as SecArmy found out).

GW isn't gonna mess around. Perhaps he will post a carrier off the coast and put another in a Japanese port then rotate some shore leave while maintaining a continuous presence. Yeah, that's the ticket, gunboat diplomacy.

Watch out for Kemp. He is a RINO!

Naw. He just got sacked too many times as a pro quarterback.

In the old AFL, he once played in a playoff game that lasted something like six quarters.

That would addle anyone's brain.

You may love Ann Coulter, and many here do, but she is not the best spokesperson for our cause.

But Ann does not pretend to be a speaker for the GOP, as the others you mentioned are. And I just love it when she really puts it to someone like ole Ted.

Personally, I always liked Kemp, that said, he should have listened to Reagan, as should have Newt. "Though shall not crititize thy fellow republicans in public".

I agree with you on Racicot, its part of the reason for a long time, that people used to like Dashle, they are very partisian, they represent there views, but there demeanor and mannerisms come across as very moderate and centered. Dashle however has blown it, he's become more hysterical, and emotional, and he sounds just as partisian as he is, Racicot still comes across as a logical, soft spoken rational person. Coulter's best gifts are swinging right of center people, but not moderates, except that her being a attractive woman does break down alot of liberal media sterotypes. Horowitz I think does the best job, as he debates almost professionly in the most hostile conditions, managing to sway a couple of liberals everytime.

You make a good, solid case for not discounting his importance, and I don't really think I did that.

But just before the first gulf war I remember reading an article (which I think Cal Thomas wrote, but I'm not completely sure about that) alleging that Powell had a habit of leaking things to the press in an attempt to get things to go his way, and from that point on I haven't quite trusted him.

But beyond all that, seeing the world through rose colored glasses is in fact an intellectual defect, an that is the reason I prefer Rumsfeld by leagues.

They are actively trying to preserve the substance of the Baathist regime.

Baath = socialist Pan Arabism.

Now we are getting to the nub of the matter. Rhodes scholars. Can you say Clinton, Wesley Clark and all those Oxford trained socialists dedicating their lives to socialist public service? The career diplomats and bureaucrats of Foggy Bottom have not received the attention like the leftist judiciary. Neither department is subject to voter approval.

Newt knows these commies and has dedicated his life to ridding our government of 70 years of majorities in federal government. He made the big breakthrough in '92 in the congress but found himself with a Rhodes Scholar Oxford socialist for a president. Since that time the socialists have been fighting for their political lives pulling every dirty tactic out of their manual.

GW knows these people also. Newt is in the loop.

You are no doubt right about the socialism.

As far as the State Department goes, there is also the less subtle issue of plain old Saudi bribery. It's quite remarkable the number of State Department bureaucrats with Middle East responsibilities, especially Ambassadors to Saudi Arabia, who turn up six months after retirement pulling down six figures for serving on the board of some Saudi-funded "institute" or "foundation."

I am watching this now on the left coast. I was gonna unload on him until I saw this. Now I understand. They bring him out to deal with inexplicable SCOTUS rulings because noone else wants to and they can talk him into it.
