SARS Scare Reaches South Texas LAST UPDATE: 4/25/2003 5:22:41 PM Posted By: Julie Fike

The SARS border scare reached all the way to Laredo. Border agents in South Texas near Freer Friday arrested 17 illegal immigrants. Six of them were Chinese. Agents took the six to a doctor’s hospital in Laredo. They were tested for SARS. Three of the six were given a clean bill of health.

The results are still pending on the other three. Laredo Immigration Assistant Chief George Gunnoe says he believes the final test results later Friday night. Gunnoe says the chances of them having SARS is very low. If all are clear of the disease, severe acute respiratory syndrome, they will immediately face deportation charges.

I just meant about the disease. I just meant it is already here. I totally believe in controling our borders and would prefer if they closed them entirely if it was up to me (but only in my dreams).

I never understand why an illegal would cross over the desert because it's so much easier to come in through the cities like most do.

Border officials warn of stranded motorist scheme

Gas cans and sympathy are being used in a ploy by undocumented immigrants to get rides from unsuspecting motorists on Paisano Drive, the Border Patrol reported Friday.

"Motorists need to be aware that picking up a hitchhiker in this area could lead to a dangerous or potentially embarrassing situation," said El Paso sector Border Patrol Chief Luis Barker. Agents will stop drivers suspected of giving rides to illegal crossers.

Signs were posted earlier this year warning drivers not to pick up hitchhikers on the stretch of road near Asarco that lacks gas stations, officials said.

The immigrant usually asks for a ride to a gas station or other location where a smuggler will meet them, agents said.

The last of that article from the link I posted ---in case any of the open borders crowd decides to come down to pick up some of these hitchhikers ---thinking these are all just hard working types who wish to vote Republican:

The Paisano area has historically been troublesome for border agents because of shootings, drug smuggling and bandits crossing back and forth from Juárez.

Closing the borders would be bad for Bush with regards to the spanish vote and his re-election in 04. :::sarcasm:::

When Asians and middle-easterns enter our country via the border, alarm bells should be going off all over the place>>

If they have SARS and they travel through MEXICO to get to the US.?? I'm sure by now the *Sly Fox* has announced that,
"mexicans don't have SARS we've already checked."

And yet it's the thing that got Silvestre Reyes into Congress in the first place --and now he's head of the hispanic caucus and opposing the Estrada nomination. Reyes only became known when he was chief of Border Patrol and Operation Blockade and Operation Hold-the-Line made him very popular with the hispanic constituents in his border town. I'm not sure why Bush thinks all hispanics want an open border with Mexico.

ROFLOL! In about 6 months it might be a real need if Canada doesn't get control of it. Of course the therapy group would have to be virtual reality so not to spread the germs.

How do you see this illness progressing in China?

the *Sly Fox*

They won't have SARS cases in Mexico, that government isn't about to take care of their own problems, they'll just take any suspected cases, lock them in a boxcar headed for the US. If they make it fine, if they don't fine ---it's all the same to the Mexican government except Fox would come out and say it was such a shame that we didn't make it easier for them.

Bush needs to search "South Gate, CA politics", where all the corrupt Mexican electeds got caught in a big mess.

The 90% hispanic VOTERS, re-called 'em, and booted 'em ALL out. Said they were running South Gate just like Mexico.

with bad lighting, agents couldn't tell if the ones who ran off were Asian or Mexican.

Might not be all that easy to tell even in good light. Then again they might be Mexicans of Asian descent. Lots of Chinese and Japanese settled in western Mexico about the same time large numbers settled along our own west coast. They would be less likely to be immigrants though, because like here, the descendents of those early immigrants have done well.
