Ospreys are one of the few bird species that mate for life. The female depends upon the male to raise the chicks. I suppose the chicks won't make it.

Witnesses told investigators that Ryu threw several balls at the osprey.... Other players on the field rushed to assist the injured osprey. So why didn't these other players stop Ryu when he started throwing balls at the bird? Obviously some of the other players saw him doing this from the start.

He was told more than once to quit aiming for the bird, according to another article.

"Hat's off" to the Daytona Cubs, who took action against this cretin only after the story became public.

Most likely they had seen him pitch and were astounded when he actually hit something that small.

Uhm, it became public as soon as it happened. Stick to the facts.

The day after the incident became public, Ryu was removed from the Daytona Cubs' team bus and demoted. The facts: They waited to act, and then acted in haste, yanking him from the team bus. Why didn't they demote him immediately, or suspend him? Guess they wanted to see whether there would be any outrage first. Truly a principled bunch.

The osprey's dead -
And even worse
I'm going to put
My thoughts in verse !
The poor hawk did not
Hear the call:
When Ryu said:
"Here : Catch this ball ! "
The missile flew
Swift through the air
And beaned the osprey
In its lair.
Oh ! What a shame
To waste such skill !
Too bad he didn't
Aim at Hill !!

This kid got a huge signing bonus (million-six, IIRC) from the Chicago Cubs, and shows his gratitude by killing the farm team's mascot in front of an audience.
Imagine the discipline problem he's going to be later on, if he's this cocky now. They might be wise to consider the bonus as "money down the drain" and just ship his ass back to Korea.
To: LizardQueen
Deport the moron.Boy talk about a quandrary for the Left. Here we are practically forced by law to be sensitive about other people's cultures, yet we must make sure that the punishment for killing a bird is much greater than murdering an unborn child. Instead of "deporting the moron", or demoting him to the "Lugnuts" team, he should undergo Ritalin medications while undergoing psychological behavioral modifications under the direction of a Save the Whales transgendered Yoga master - then he will learn that animals are not under man's dominion, but instead will believe like most Americans that animals are objects of veneration and worship.

Somewhere you missed the studies that indicate abuse of humans often begins with abuse of animals.

Sllllipppery Sloooope!
Shouldn't the only thing being investigates is whether he had a hunting license?
Last I checked, we eat millions and millions of birds.
If it needs protecting, put it in a zoo.

Red herring. We pass laws to protect animals from abuse for an ordered society. The guy wasn't hunting. With his fast ball, he was aiming to take the bird out.
btw, ospreys are one of the few spieces that find a mate and mate for life. The female depends on the male for raising the chicks. They take turns chasing away predators and protecting while the others hunt.
If you can't figure out protection of animals from animals with much bigger brains with the capacity to wipe species off the face of the planet, then I surely can't help you. In the end, it isn't the non-humans we are trying to protect. We are trying to save our own butts. Maybe you'll understand that. Then again, maybe not.

another reason to drop baseball and go to
cricket, they bounce the ball to the batter
like we do to small children.
oops they might hit a worm that way.

If you can't figure out protection of animals from animals with much bigger brains with the capacity to wipe species off the face of the planet, then I surely can't help you. We are diametrically opposed on this subject, I'm sure.
If the bird needed protection, it needed to be in a protected environment.
This can only mean away from human habitation.
All animals serve human interests, else take a sample of its DNA and bit it goodbye.
Animals should never have rights over any human.

Do you aim for squirrels when they run across the road? The BIRD was in a high nest in which the pitcher deliberately threw numerous baseballs at it.
To: hotpotato
Somewhere you missed the studies that indicate abuse of humans often begins with abuse of animals. So let's go ahead and arrest him for being a murderer now, like in the Minority Report flick.

If the bird needed protection, it needed to be in a protected environment. The pair and their chicks were in a protected environment. It's called The Law
For those that can't understand that, there is another protected environment and that's called jail
Animals should never have rights over any human.
This is completely ignorant. You don't get it at all.

All animals serve human interests, else take a sample of its DNA and bit it goodbye. Which argues my point about the fact that conservation and protection is about saving our own butts. But you don't seem able to figure that out beyond your blanket statement above. I know... it's a little complex but you can try. Afterall, you *do* have the bigger brain between humans and non-humans, right? Right?

We have this geese problem...
So do we here in S. E. Michigan. The only easy solution I can think of is machete's. Given how they no longer fear people, it is easier than heck to pretend to walk by them and whack their heads off......
Many golf courses around here are overwhelmed by the damn things. Since golf regulations limit the number of clubs in a bag to 14 I think, I would sacrifice my 2 iron for the machete......... LOL!

I would sacrifice my 2 iron for the machete Sharpen the flange on the 2 iron and you have a dual use club. May help cutting through the tall rough as well.

Yea, and I admit that tonight I was waiting with my Beeman Kodiak for a pesky squirrel and rabbit. Set out live traps for both, sprinkled peanuts around the squirrel trap only to find out later the damn squirrel ate all the peanuts and never set foot in the trap. Unfortunately, I have regulations in my condo association which "legally" prohibits me from discharging any B-B guns or pellet rifles at all.
That being said, as I sat in my dining room with the doorwall to my deck open and sighting onto the respective baits, the critters never came into view.....

Why make this into a "rights" thing? To me it's an employee discipline thing.
The birds had names. The fans loved them. The pitcher had been told to stop aiming for the birds' nest. He thought it would be fun to aim anyway for a bird whose nesting instincts forbid it from being anything other than stationary. He knocked the bird out of its nest in full view of outraged teammates and any fan who had come early enough to see the warmup.
Imagine that I become employed by an establishment that has adopted a stray cat out back as a "pet", and I decide to kick the thing every time I see it. My fellow employees, who have all been there longer than me, tell me to knock it off. Maybe a customer is outraged by my behavior and tells me to knock it off. Maybe the assistant manager tells me to knock it off. Maybe the big boss tells me to quit kicking the cat too. Maybe not. But on the day I decide to assert my permanent supremacy over the cat in unmistakeable terms, by blinding it and leaving it to suffer and die, the big boss is perfectly justified in deciding that *I* am the problem in the now-poisoned work atmosphere and that *I* must go.
Then, imagine my arrogance when I tell the boss that "animals should never have rights over any human".
That bird did not have ANY "rights" over the pitcher. But if you believe that the pitcher had the "right" to act like a vicious asshole, you must also believe that every other human present in the stadium, team member or fan, had a "right" to their mascot.
Or at least a right to visit their outrage on his sorry, ungrateful, overpaid head.

My apologies regarding the school zone statement. There is NO reason for this kind of sh!t and for people to say it was just a "stupid bird" is just ignorant as far as I am concerned. If the bird flew into the path of a pitch then it would be an accident, but this is clearly a case of intentional animal abuse.
To: Chirodoc
No. That would be basketball players. Or Football. Or Hockey. Or Soccer. Take yer pick.
To: Dr Warmoose
"Boy talk about a quandrary for the Left...We must make sure that the punishment for killing a bird is much greater than murdering an unborn child."Yes -- quite the conundrum for the hypocrites of the Left.
There is certain to be a world-wide protest organized to first demand castration, and then drawing and quartering the minor league pitcher.
