Mexican ID Card Measure Goes to [CA] Senate
L.A. Times ^ | April 29, 2003 | Nancy Vogel

SACRAMENTO — Identification cards issued by Mexico, already accepted by Los Angeles and 14 other local governments in California, would have to be honored by all cities and counties under a bill that cleared the Assembly on Monday.

Proponents say widespread acceptance of the cards would make it easier for Mexican citizens living in California to open bank accounts, get marriage licenses, use libraries and respond to routine traffic stops by police.

"This bill will benefit thousands of Mexican nationals," said Assemblyman Manny Diaz (D-San Jose), author of AB 522...

Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy (R-Monrovia) urged a no vote, calling the bill "another way of giving amnesty to illegal aliens in California."

But Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia (R-Cathedral City) said: "It doesn't matter how they got here..."

Those who would benefit most from the bill cannot vote today, Garcia told her colleagues, but "in the future they're going to remember whether you let them live with dignity..."

The bill's page is here.

Some Senator's emails are at this page

Other emails not listed on the preceding page can be found by going to each Senator's page from here. I'd just use 'Senator.NAME@sen.ca.gov, and if it bounced look it up.

Kalifornia is sinking into the sea, and nobody there is noticing.

Doesn't this undermine the Citizens of the United States? How about those that Migrated here legaly and got thier citizenship LEGALLY!!! This bill is UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!! and should be challenged in the Supreme Court!!!

I was going to suggest that all CA residents that don't wish to become Mexican residents leave and take their companies with them.

That way, Gov. Dufus and his socialist government can tax and spend Mexico out of existence.

If the state of CA allows business to accept non-offical ID from one group of people...then they should accept other ID forms from other people

Say a black woman gets one of those cheap ID's from InnerCity ID's.....and a bank denies her ID because it is not official.....and the black woman sues because her rights were violated because Mexicans are allowed to use non-American ID's while she (as a black woman) cannot use hers?

I hate to use the "race card" term...but allowing Mexicans to use "non-offical" ID as "official ID" discriminates against other groups of people who cannot use their "unofficial" IDs as "official".

I believe various Central American countries are pushing their own cards as well. Are we also supposed to accept, say, IDs from the Yemeni or Libyan governments?

Legitimate aliens already have IDs, passports or greencards.

Your point is right on the money, of course, but it doesn't make any difference. This is Kalifornia you are talking about and there is simply no "sense", as we understand it, left in Kalifornia. It's all over; the place is gone forever.
