I thought that it meant "have a nice day" in Greek. Well, in that spirit, you should do so as well........
My grandfather was four-two when he eloped with my grandmother, who then was twenty and fresh from the "old country." Her relatives actually did chase with mayhem on their minds the terrified groom all over the swamps, etc. South of Chicago on the Indiana border.
This has been a hoot in our family ever since, and it was my grandfather laughingly who told me over (too) many family dinners that the "shotgun wedding" was "invented in Greece." and that families often setttled matters relating to family honor in less-than-peaceful ways over there.
Our Canadian friend, who from his posts to me and to many others on other threads, appears to be a very man, went ballistic over nothing. His "banning" undoubtedly was not due alone to his inexplicable tirades against me.
I was too slow on the draw and realized that he actually was enraged and tried to joke with him back and forth. I could not imagine that anyone really would get so apoplectic over an ofhand, anonymous, brief, and innocent remark inspired by my own ethnic background and childhood experiences.... As for the offending phrase, I actually thought it meant "have a good one/nice day" in Greek. The fact is that I have distanced myself from the Greek language and Greeks in general for over thirty years. And this current imbroglio reminds me why I did so.
Sorry to have offended you with my poor memory of the language. Ltm and lb should pace themselves and not take trivial things so seriously. We all are up against an fearsome array of real problems and issues in today's crazy world. All the best.......
