I agree that restoring it is ridiculous. The whole point of it was that it was a natural rock formation and a man made restoration, even if identical to the original, would have no value at all.

Get one of those big sony tv screens up there and have it display the image all the time :)

I suppose Mt. Rushmore is a monstrosity to you, and Niagara Falls, and the Grand Canyon also.

This was no Niagara. The darn thing was so high up the mountain, and you were so far below, that it was far from impressive. Good for photos? Yep, with a first rate telephoto lens.

There is a natural process of decay in those cliffs such that if you just wait a few centuries, another profile may open up all by itself. If they really feel that have to bring it back, they should find some other spot that almost looks like a profile, and chisel it a bit with dynomite.

I remember being told when I was up there that it already was restored, and was being held together with bolts and cables. Of course, this could just be the rural version of an unban legend.

Turnbuckles used to secure the historic symbol of New Hampshire,
The Old Man of the Mountain, are seen Saturday May 3, 2003
in Franconia, N.H. The formation broke off and was discovered
early Saturday morning.

...rural version of an unban legend.

That would be a french "unban" legend...the french do use anti-deodorant...it's called "cheese".

Storyland's the best amusement park for little kids.

I'm taking my three up there next month for the third time. It's clean, cheap, upbeat and everyone who works there goes the extra mile.

We'll drive through Franconia Notch, maybe take the tram to the top of Cannon Mountain. We'll miss the Old Man, but I doubt that will have any real impact other than a chance for me to be nostalgic.

The White Mountains of NH rock!

Yes, it's true. For several years they've had to hold the old man's nose on with cables. As a local, I have to say I'm a little saddened.

Dan Webster, our favorite son, had a saying that incorporated an allusion to the Old Man ending with the statement that "in the mountains, God makes men." Fond farewell to a legend and old friend.

That's a shame.

Caesar's Head up in S.Carolina just isn't the same . . .

I'm afraid they don't know what they're getting into when they talk about restoring it. Not only would it not be "the same" because man-made, it would be outrageously difficult and expensive because of the sheer size of the rock involved. I used to work in highway construction - of course we were usually getting rid of rock rather than trying to install it, but dealing with tons of stone on the sheer side of a mountain (and how far DOWN is it?) is a lot more difficult than dealing with it when you have a nice flat place to put the equipment . . . and it's difficult enough as it is.

Wonder how many on FR remember that show. I used to watch it, enjoyed it greatly at my young age. There was something different about the sitcoms/series back then. Not saying they were necessarily better. Watching them today is interesting, the magic of youth seems gone. Can't watch them then go to school and talk about em at lunch :)
