"Governor Craig Benson says he's committed to restoring the Old Man of the Mountains. Benson says he is already working with state officials to consider the prospect of restoring the naturally formed stone profile."

So, if ten thousand glaciers cut ten thousand valleys for ten thousand years, would another "old man in the mountain" be created?

But wait! Everyone in NH who pays taxes (or, the way NH works, more likely every hard drinking, car driving, motel sleeping tourist from Mass.) will be more than happy to restore the face, possibly with UV resistant fiber glass, and why not use Mr. Benson's face for the model!

Its not the same if you have to glue it back together.

What about duct tape and bondo?

I remember seeing JJ when I was a little kid. I was too young to get most of the humor or to follow the plots, but I got a mighty kick out of him saying his famous "Dynooomite!". The eery thing is how totally dated those shows look now. They have a distinctly different texture compared to the new ones -- the lighting, the colors, the pacing, the recording medium. Lots of different factors I guess. You see them and you realize that they really are part of another era, another time. But I was there, then, to see the original broadcasts. ((shiver)) The passage of time is so....weird.

What about duct tape and bondo?

Down here we would just put it out in the front yard and leave it like it is.

Perhaps the old man in the mountain, falling and turning to dust, is a sign akin to the Statue of Liberty waving a red warning flag 3 weeks before 9/11. Remember that? Here's the pic:

***

Over time, nature carved out a 40-foot-tall profile resembling an old man's face, and it soon became New Hampshire's most recognizable symbol. The face appears on the state quarter, state road signs and countless souvenirs and tourist brochures.

Millions of tourists have traveled through Franconia Notch to view the profile, 1,200 feet above Interstate 93 about 65 miles north of Concord. In the 19th century, the profile inspired New Hampshire statesman Daniel Webster to write: "In the mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men."

Psalms 104:29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

"Dan Webster, our favorite son, had a saying that incorporated an allusion to the Old Man ending with the statement that "in the mountains, God makes men."

Has God just given his OK to cloning ?

Only Liberals waste our money to keep the environment in stasis. The crumbling of this rock was a natural phenomenon

No, it is more evidence of Global Warming, which is caused by man.

Shalom!

Hi...everybody,

Oh the loss of the "Old Man of The Mountain" really makes me sad.

I spent many, many years going up North to Beautiful New Hampshire.

Thank you for the Clarke's Trading Post link.

They are still open for Locals and Tourists, the original family is still around too, they are very nice people.

Franconia Notch, Cannon Mountain and Echo Lake will never be the same without The Old Man.

Local Legend has it that if the Old Man ever fell...that would signal the End of America.

I do believe that The LORD sends us warning signals, this is one of Many that HE has sent to Wake US Up!

Have you got a source for that legend of the Face falling meaning the End of America?

Very sorry Race, can not provide a source other than the source was a U.S. Forest Ranger from the White Mountains National Parks Department who was our walking tour giude of the area.

And that was so long ago, probably in 1980 or 1981.

I'm sure that some local Old Timers or Retired White Mountains National Forest Rangers/Parks Dept employees would be able to recount the Legend.

Thanks for the ping- I'm positive I saw that sometime when I lived in Boston. It was a tourist attraction and it's kinda sad to see it fall.
