Some Democrats are still hoping that maybe, just maybe, being frustrated, bitter, and outsmarted - will somehow win them an election one day...

Please correct me if I am wrong but isn't the National Guard the same bunch we have been calling a lot of up lately?

It is going to be hard to paint Bush’s joining of the ANG as some sort of draft-dodge when we have National Guard members shipping out and coming home on a regular basis right now.

suddenly military service records mean everything to these people.

Now serving in the TANG is on par with writing a letter about how you loathe the military (which, at the time they first learned about it, was A-OK with them).

You see, it's perfectly consistent.
X42 openly loathed the military, so it's perfectly consistent to then dodge the draft.

GWB openly respects the military, so to be consistent he would have not merely to have undergone dangerous flight training the the National Guard, he would have to win a Congressional Medal of Honor with oak clusters. Preferably posthumously . . .

My letter to the author of this article...

Dear Mr. Smith,

I really enjoyed your article on the President and his carrier landing along with all the great background info from the Texas National Guard (re: "Tale of the chief: Duty called, dad stepped in").

Could you please write some more of this stuff?

As a former Special Forces officer with more than 27 years of service it really does my heart good to hear you liberals whine about military service of President Bush after having supported a draft dodging, lying, molesting, womanizing and, by some accounts, rapist as the standard bearer of your party for 8 years.

Please, please keep up the whining. It really does put a smile on mine, and the faces many of my military associates.

Also, I'm sure I missed it but could your send me a copy of any articles you might have written about the military legacy of Bill Clinton. I've bet some of my friends that given your expertise on military matters, you certainly wrote some stuff on Clinton. You know, where you protested his lying to get out of the draft and all that. And as a bonus could you throw in any article(s) about the bombing of innocent civilians at the asprin factory ($40M in cruise missles as well) in the Sudan and highlight the pain felt felt by the families of those victims. I'm sure they never saw it coming. Great military legacy there you know.

I didn't think so. My buddies all said you were just a liberal windbag who was just running his mouth to make political points but I said that no self-respecting journalist would do that on the backs of dead young Americans and their families.

Guess I was wrong. Well, anyway keep up the good whining. We just love it.

Regards,
Bill Hanrahan

President Bush was IN the National Guard during his part of the Vietnam War. If being in the National Guard was draft dodging, then what do we call real draft dodging?

There are two issues.

1. Very few birthday groups were actually drafted during the Vietnam War, even at it's height. I'm going by memory, but I don't think they ever drafted more than 120 of the selected dates. (About 1/3) What this means is that EVERY year, more than 2/3 of the draft population did NOT have to join the military and, therefore, did not go to war. (Add to that the numbers who were in the active duty Navy and Air Force. Except for the actual pilots who fly missions and perhaps a few patrol boats, these services simply weren't in jeopardy during Vietnam in any significant way. Add up the numbers. Most of the dead and wounded were from the Army. If joining the Texas Guard was dodging, then so was joining the Navy.)

2. President Bush DID join one of the services during the Vietnam War. (Does anyone know if his birthdate was a selected draft number? If it was, then fine. If it wasn't, then he really didn't even have to join at all.)
