Look, if you keep saying that, it takes the fun out of it for the rest of us, okay? I mean, c'mon....have a heart. We need some comic relief here.

When my son was in 1st grade, a new student teacher (a recent graduate from the University of Washington) sent a letter home, with the kids, introducing herself to the parents. I, with the help of my mother, found about 25 errors. I corrected the letter in red ink and mailed it back to the school principal, signed:
They're going to their school over there.

Ms. Student teacher was not hired.

He says, "As long as you're in my class, you're going to write properly; however, if you wish to use Ebonics outside of the classroom, that's fine with me".

He is correct. The students' grammar outside the classroom is no concern of his.

"Why not homeschool your child if you feel the teacher is inadequate?"

No problem...do I get my taxes back since I will not be using the service?

No?

In that case, I want better for my buck.

I love your response. I am supposed to turn a blind eye to the absolutely atrocious grammar this teacher exhibits, and if I stand up and expect a better performance from the people being paid to do a job, I have an anger management problem.

The real problem here are people who are willing to excuse below acceptable performance, from teachers, or politicians.

Ummm.....what if the first graders vocabulary and grammar is better than the teachers? Remember, this is Florida, land of Affirmative Action (until Jeb washed it away), and this is very likely a quota employee.

What's funny is if the grammar used in this letter had been the same as a post on FR by a freeper, the grammar police on FR that defend this teacher would likely be the ones shredding a freeper for their comments. Irony.

Luis, would you like to borrow my red pen?

My mother (a retired elementary teacher) sent a similar note back to my niece's teacher, with the mistakes corrected in red ink.

:-)

I have 2 young girls in public schools and have received quite a few notices from teachers and the school district which contained misspellings and horrendous grammar errors. I ALWAYS send them back corrected. I have not yet received one single reply.

" He says, "As long as you're in my class, you're going to write properly; however, if you wish to use Ebonics outside of the classroom, that's fine with me"."

That's better than a teacher who thinks he/she has a right to tell your children what they can/cannot do outside of class. The kids have a right to speak the way they are comfortable outside of class unless the parent wants it differently. The important part is that they are atleast taught the correct way of writing and speaking. A teacher can't be a substitute parent.

She's a native.

Ahhh, that explains it. Native Americans are educationally challenged due to the inferior education fostered upon them by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
