I didn't live through the great depression but I lived through the double digit inflation and then Carter's malaise and stagflation, and I'm here to tell you. This economy is not that bad. Six percent unemployment, no inflation, and interest rates nearly negative? There's nothing seriously wrong besides democrapic spin.

I never said that the economy wasn't a major issue. I said it will not be "the premiere issue" in 2004 or any time soon, because of 911.
And if you think tax cuts contribute to deficits, you learned nothing from the Reagan era, where massive tax cuts doubled government revenue.
Spending creates deficits. It was true under Reagan and it's true today.
Bush does not work hard enough to cut (non-military) spending. Nobody in government does.

People begging and begging and begging to come here and when they get here spitting on us and trying to destroy our way of life. Repressive and tyrannical regimes abroad, particularly in the middle east that use us as a strawman to deflect anger in their streets away from their despotic and incomeptent rule. World bodies that attempt to tie our hands like the Lilliputians did Gulliver by lying and spinning and attempting to shame us with lies. Socialist groups that infiltrate our country and encourage the swarming of the poor across our borders because socialism would not work here, since we have no true lower class, unless they import one. Those that would destroy our culture in the name of Marxism. Those that hate us and attempt to project their hatred and their crimes on us.
I could go on. Your question has a hostile tone to it. Why do you think that Free Republic is a good place for you to post?

I guess "campus wildlife" tripped him up during that one half year away from home? He only "pursued" that Master's for 6 months, damn Master's are more elusive than jackalopes are!

Whoa. I got that one off on the wrong foot. Must have misinterpreted your post. No, I'm not angry, just curious about what rings people's anger bell, that's all. I see your explanation as just that--an explanation. I just take great pains not to let it foment into anger.
And I guess I'm on free republic because I'm a conservative Republican. Sorry if I tread on your toes.

No Problem! And Welcome!
I thought you might have been a "Blame America First" type. In fact, if I wanted to boil down what makes me angry as an American, I'd say that the "Blame America First" attitude here at home and throughout the world would pretty much sum it up. It's like we're required to be perfect and others think they have a right to OUR STUFF because we're the most prosperous and free country ever, rather than, heaven forbid, taking notes on what we do and doing it themselves. No... they would rather bash us and try to get what we have away from us.

This administration, for all its shrouding itself in the language of democracy and freedom, clearly has but one agenda: making a few rich Americans richer. It took around half the article, but I knew this was coming eventually.

I've never been to Austin, either, but I have heard it used in the same breath as Ithaca and Berkeley.
Go gentle on those new neighbors. ;o)

Seeing that Northwestern University is located in Evanston, Illinois, one can wonder about this fellow's commitment to journalistic accuracy. Heck, if he cannot locate his own grad school, one can wonder if he can locate himself in Texas.

Maybe an Aussie editor changed it for local consumption?

This crap is another great argument for changing the voting age to 30 and restricting the Franchise to people who actually own property and pay taxes.

Maybe an Aussie editor changed it for local consumption?Perhaps, but I have the feeling that this clown deliberately used the Aussie/British spelling of the word. Kind of like how Madonna has a British accent now.
