Different cultures and customs for sure, but there really isn't much of a language barrier between Portuguese and Spanish. I've done business in South America, and I have heard many a conversation where a Brazilian was speaking Portuguese to an Argentine (or Chilean or whatever) that was speaking Spanish, each conversing in their own language. Pretty amazing to this gringa that doesn't have a command of either language! The languages are similar enough that they have no trouble understanding one another.

My second language is Spanish and I can indeed understand enough Portuguese to get by. I just can't speak it worth a d#*$!
