Dennis Miller on Leno last night:

paraphrased
Yeah, when I heard what the Dixie Chicks said, I said to myself, "That does it, I'm never buying another Dixie Chicks album...come to think of it...I have never bought a Dixie Chicks album."

The momentum for any musical group is radio airplay. You take away that and you've removed their power source. If people don't hear you on the radio then they don't know about you and don't buy your music.

Tell that to the "Phish" guys.

what is this "picking on girls" about?
It is obvious that these cuddly pretty girls from a top-40
country-pop-variety are no particular threat to national security. Their "abuse" of free speach was insignificant,
but when free speach can be "abused" it implies that
you're in "1984".

Hey, don't put me on a pedestal. I just try and speak the truth whenever I can. I'm afraid most folks don't see me as being fit to be behind a pulpit (myself included), so the only preaching I can do is here.

I'm glad you agreed with what I said though. It comforts my heart to see there some good folks still out there. Kinda reminds of Lot and Sodom "I will not destroy the town if I find 10 righteousness." I think I now know why God is holding back his judgement on this nation.

OK, you got me with that, so I'll amend my statement to read "most" musical groups.

The D.C.'s, however, don't follow the same marketing model as Phish--they're a pop group (or country pop) and will live or die by the radio. Phish has a die-hard "cult" following whereas the D.C.'s fans (pop music listeners) tend to follow musical fads.

I still stand by my statement that the D.C.'s are running on pure momentum.

The Chicks lost a lot of fans, and some of that loss was alleviated by lefties rushing to purchase their current CD for political reasons. Those political purchases will fade.

I'm sure they lost a lot of their fans --- country music has plenty of more patriotic types to replace them with better voices and better songs. They probably are getting a number of liberals running out buying their music but unless they find a way to keep attracting liberal buyers then they'll fade away ----like you said ---they can find bars to sing in but they won't be big stars.

>>Country is the Special Olympics of music.<<

The Beatles and the Stones didn't think so.

All "abuse" of free speech is insignificant.
You probably wern't paying attention when so many were pointing out the slippery slope.

What must be sanctioned is physical harm or personal intimidation; all else is totally subjective and subject to instant abuse.

"Don't get me started," Maines said of the Keith song to the Los Angeles Daily News. "I hate it. It's ignorant, and it makes country music sound ignorant.

Once again she insults country music fans. Toby Keith's song is #1 on almost every country music chart. So if the song is ignorant, then the fans are ignorant by implication. This nitwit is ashamed to be in country music. I think the D.C.s should go rock. They don't appreciate country fans.

There is an overwhelming pressure against them from the american media, and that's also affecting the public opinion in a rather negative way. These women have no
political influence, and should not be attacked on such a scale for merely expressing their anti-war opinions which
are also shared by no small number of americans.
Their message appears as their free right to a free speech, and they could just view the organised negative response of media as an attack on their civil rights.

Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' is at #4 after 1356 weeks (26 YEARS!!!) on the charts. That is amazing!

The new "Rolling Stone" has an article about DSOTM and goes on to say that Pink Floyd is re-releasing it in Surround Sound 5.1.

And to stay on topic with this thread, the latest "Newsweek" reports that President Bush has given Maines a pass over her comment. Apparently he wasn't to torn up about it.
