Robert Leroy Ripley, artist, author, and radio broadcaster, was born on Christmas Day, 1893, in Santa Rosa, California. A talented, self-taught artist, Ripley sold his first drawing to Life magazine when he was only 14! Ripley was also a natural athlete who longed for a career in baseball, but his dreams of pitching in the Big Leagues were shattered when he broke his arm while playing his first professional game. After the accident, Ripley returned to his earlier goal of becoming a professional artist. He landed a job as a cartoonist covering sports for the San Francisco Chronicle, but, soon after, he left California and headed for New York City.

In 1918, while working as a sports cartoonist for the New York Globe, Ripley created his first collection of odd facts and feats. The cartoons, based on unusual athletic achievements, were submitted under the title
"Champs and Chumps." His editor, however, wanted a title that would describe the incredible nature of the sporting feats. After much deliberation, it was changed to Believe It or Not!® -- the cartoon was an instant success.

Travel was Robert Ripley's lifelong obsession. During his career, he visited 198 countries, traveling a distance equal to 18 complete trips around the world! In 1920, he made his first trek across Europe. Two years later, he visited Central and South America and wrote about what he saw in a syndicated feature column called "Rambles Around South America."

He was drawn to Asia in 1925, crossing through Japan, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Ripley felt most at home in China. He found Chinese culture to be fascinating, and adopted certain Chinese customs. When he entertained, he often greeted his guests in traditional Asian costume. He presided over elaborate feasts in which he described the dishes of each course in precise detail, and at one point he even signed his cartoons "Rip Li!"

Ripley lived up to his reputation as a man who thrived on all things strange, and his personality was in many ways as unusual as the stories and objects he collected! His houses and apartment were filled with artifacts he brought back from his travels. There were Chinese wallhangings, totem poles from Alaska, a collection of beer steins from Germany, and giant bronze guardian statues from the Orient. A colleague once said that "the most curious object in the collection is probably Mr. Ripley himself." He drew his cartoon every day between 7 am and 11 am -- always drawing it upside-down! He was a man who dressed in bright colors and patterns, wore bat-wing ties and two-toned spat shoes. He collected cars, but never learned to drive. Even though he often used complicated recording equipment for his broadcasts, associates remarked that he was afraid to use a telephone for fear he would be electrocuted! A non-swimmer, he owned an odd assortment of boats including dug-out canoes and even an authentic Chinese sailing junk moored at B.I.O.N. Island, his estate in Mamaroneck, New York.

The 1930s and 40s were the Golden Age of Ripley. The phrase "Believe It or Not!" was a part of everyday speech. In small towns across the United States, people filled halls and vaudeville theaters to hear his lectures and see his films. Later, he would introduce his wonders to the world via television. The shy young man from a small town in California was now a celebrated public figure. Self-educated, he received honorary titles and degrees, and was the first cartoonist to become a millionaire!

The Odditorium
A show of incredible truths, wonders and paradoxes that have made Ripley's cartoons famous.

Lydia McPherson--With the Longest Red Hair in the World
Harry and Lillian McGregor--Lift and Pull Heavyweights with their Eye-lids

Leo Kongee--The Human Pin-Cushion Never Bleeds
Singlee--Believes He Cannot Be Harmed by His God Fire

Martin Laurello--Turns His Head Completely Backward on His Shoulders
Demetrio Ortiz--Twists His Body Completely Around While His Feet Remain Stationary

Matchstick 'Silver Ghost' Rolls Royce. This 1907 Silver Ghost Rolls Royce was made by Reg Pollard of Manchester, England, from 63 pints of glue and 1,016,711 ordinary matchsticks! This 13 feet authentically detailed 3/4 scale model, complete with moving engine parts, wheels that turn, and lights that work took Mr. Pollard 4,609 man-hours, spread over fifteen months, to build! Suffering from acute arthritis, Mr. Pollard made over 550 matchstick models during his lifetime. Believe It or Not!

The Fertility Statues! from the Ivory Coast of Africa these statues have generated interest throughout the entire world. In the past two years, dozens of women have claimed that as a result of touching the statues, they have been able to start a family. The legend of the fertility statues started in 1995. The totems-- a male and female statue, each about four feet high-- were meant merely to decorate the exterior of the headquarters of Ripley's Believe It or Not!  In the first year the statues were displayed, eight out of twenty staffers became or would soon become parents. So please don't touch!...unless you want to start a family.

See the Shrunken Torso!  The practice of shrinking heads was once common amongst the Jivaro Indians of Ecuador. It was a ritual that had been handed down through generations. The heads of slain warriors were valued as trophies or symbols of bravery. When a fighter killed his enemy, the victim's head was removed. The skin was then peeled away from the skull and hot stones and sand were poured into the cavity. The head was sewn shut and boiled in herbs until it had shrunk to the size of a fist. Ceremonial dances, feasts and songs accompanied the ritual.

Made famous in a Robert Ripley cartoon, the Church of the One Tree was constructed in 1873 from a single redwood tree. The tree was 275 feet high and 18' in diameter. It is now a museum for the man who made it famous.

Sony Pictures Television's weekly look at the world of strange and fascinating phenomena kicks into high gear this summer with all-new episodes of Ripley's Believe it or Not!, hosted by actor Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) and field correspondent, Kelly Packard (Baywatch). Ripley's Believe it or Not! airs Wednesdays at 9PM (ET), 10PM (PT) on TBS Superstation.

Ripley's Believe it or Not! takes viewers through a world of amazing feats, facts, and artifacts that stretch the limits of imagination. This season the series expands on that mission to include opening each show with an event performed before a studio audience at such diverse locations as the Hollywood Boulevard, the Las Vegas Strip or stadiums across the country.

The show also features such regular elements as "Spot the Not," a weekly trivia segment in which viewers are challenged to pick the claim that isn't real and special "
Ripley's Record" commemoration for people who break a World Record while appearing on the show.

Ripley's Believe it or Not! is produced by Sony Pictures Television, with Dan Jbara serving as executive producer. The series is produced in association with Dean Cain's production company, Angry Dragon Entertainment
.

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Today's FEEBLE attempt at humor:

Senior Personal Ads

FOXY LADY: Sexy, fashion-conscious blue-haired beauty, 80's,
slim,5'-4" (used to be 5-6), searching for sharp-looking,
sharp-dressing companion. Matching white shoes and belt a plus.

LONG-TERM COMMITMENT: Recent widow who has just buried fourth
husband looking for someone to round out a six- unit plot.
Dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath not a problem.

SERENITY NOW: I am into solitude, long walks, sunrises, the
ocean, yoga and meditation. If you are the silent type, let's
get together, take our hearing aids out and enjoy quiet times.

WINNING SMILE: Active grandmother with original teeth seeking a
dedicated flossier to share rare steaks, corn on the cob and
caramel candy.

BEATLES OR STONES? I still like to rock, still like to cruise in
my Camaro on Saturday nights and still like to play the air
guitar. If you were a groovy chick, or are now a groovy hen,
let's get together and listen to my boss collection of
eight-track tapes.

MEMORIES: I can usually remember Monday through Thursday. If you
can remember Friday, Saturday and Sunday, let's put our two heads
together.

MINT CONDITION: Male, 1932, high mileage, good condition, some
hair, many new parts including hip, knee, cornea, valves. Isn't
in running condition, but walks well.

Good Morning LaDivaLoca, Military members and everybody.

Warm up exercise for this morning . . .

An elderly woman, having never married, had requested no male pallbearers. In her handwritten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote, "They wouldn't take me out while I was alive, I don't want them to take me out when I'm dead."

Great thread. Have a great day.

Cone Head Skull

Yes, this is an actual cone head. This elongated skull is result of an ancient practice called head binding, that would begin as a child and continued through adulthood

Good Morning Meek.

We are having some of your bad weather up here in East Tenn.

Several low lying areas were flooded and numerous schools are closed.

Sounds like a good day for an indoor job!

Good Morning LindaSOG. Sorry that I didn't get a chance to share the offer that you made. That could have been dangerous.

In Illinois, animals can be sent to jail. A monkey served five days in a Chicago jail for shoplifting. Similarly, in South Bend, Indiana, a monkey was convicted of the crime of smoking a cigarette and sentenced to pay a fine of $25 plus the cost of the trial.

There are a lot of animals that I'd like to see in jail (the kind that hurt children and beat or rape women).

In Miami, it is against the law to imitate animals.

In Mount Dora, Fl. A pet rooster cannot say cock-a-doodle-do within the city limits.

In Sarasota, it is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a swimsuit.

USELESS FACT
- - - - -
Mother-of-pearl is not always white.
It can be pink, blue, purple, gray, or
even green. Nor is it produced only by
the pearl oyster. The abalone and the
pearl mussel both have shells that are
lined with fine-quality mother-of-pearl.

Cat inherits widow's house and a trust fund
Associated Press

Published May 6, 2003

LONDON -- He has a house and a trust fund -- but will it last all nine lives, especially in a down economy?

Time will tell for Tinker the cat, whose wealthy owner died recently -- leaving the feline the bulk of her estate worth just under a $1 million.

But for now, it's the lap of luxury for the former stray, who now lives in a London house valued at $500,000.

Tinker also has a $160,000 trust fund to keep him in catnip, cream and fine seafood.

When Tinker dies, the estate will pass to the trustees, Ann and Eugene Wheatley, who deliver Tinker's food and milk each day.

I have nothing to say.

It's against the law to look at a moose from an airplane.

Adultery may not be grounds for divorce if the action hasn't commenced within two years of the discovery of the act by the other spouse.

A marriage can be considered void if there is failure to consummate the marriage at the time of the marriage and still hasn't been consummated when filing for divorce.

Things were fine where I am. Jackson Tenn. got hit pretty hard. I think it was eleven fatalities and excessive property damage.

The western part of the state is a lot flatter and a tornado can get pretty hairy.

I guess that I don't have to tell you about that. Hold on to your hat and have a great day.

It is against the law to have disco dance contests last more than eight hours.

It is against the law to call another person a coward if he refuses to duel.

It is illegal to shoot any game other than whales from a moving automobile.

Alamo, a person found intoxicated must be given a large dose of castor oil by a local doctor...and failure to gulp it down will result in a fine.

Collierville, keeping clean can be a chilly proposition, as a law there says all bathtubs must be kept in the backyard.

Memphis, it is illegal for a woman to drive a car unless there is a man either running or walking in front of it waving a red flag to warn approaching motorists and pedestrians.

Memphis, it is against the law to sell teddy bears or yo-yo's on Sunday.

Newport, it's against the law to tickle a girl under her chin with a feather duster in order to get her attention.

Wartburg, the town strictly forbids single, widowed or divorced women from parachuting on Sunday!

Waverly, you better not let your horse near the tub, since horses are prohibited from sleeping in them, as well as in the house.

Just wait until you learn all of the "unwritten rules" (rules like - your sister is still your sister even after the divorce!).

For over a thousand years, prehistoric farmers inhabited much of the present-day state of Arizona. When the first Europeans arrived, all that remained of this ancient culture were the ruins of villages, irrigation canals and various artifacts. Among these ruins is the Casa Grande, or "Big House," one of the largest and most mysterious prehistoric structures ever built in North America. Casa Grande Ruins, the nation's first archeological preserve, protects the Casa Grande and other archeological sites within its boundaries. You are invited to see the Casa Grande and to hear the story of the ancient ones the Akimel O'otham call the Hohokam, "those who are gone."

It was 35 here last night. High today in the upper 50's.

Idaho ... gotta love it! ... even if I am a native Texan from right there in the DFW area. As I say to my folks and my brothers down there around Dentopn ...

"Tell those millions of folks on the road along I35, I635, I20, I30 and the GWBush hello for me! LOL!"

Stay safe down there.

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION

The light of God surround you
The love of God enfold you
The power of God protect you
The presence of God watch over you
Wherever you are,God is,
And all is well.
Amen.

Bless This House

Bless this house O Lord we pray;
Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout,
Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall,
Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove
ever open to joy and love.

Bless these windows shining bright,
Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there,
with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within,
keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be
Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we
May dwell O Lord with thee.
