need help with new laptop questions (vanity)

Posted on 05/17/2003 11:00:45 PM PDT by stuck_in_new_orleans

I just purchased a new computer, a laptop to be exact and Ive got 2 questions if someone could help me out with:

1. when online i keep getting bombarded with annoying pop-up messenger ads..is there any way to block these?

2. My computer has a dvd/cd-rw drive...how do i burn music onto a cd? Is there a certain program i have to buy or do i simply go to a place like grokster.com and just download it there? It seems like after I download the song that I would need to do something else as well.

thanks

Congrats. What kind? My wife and I just got ourselves new laptops as well. (My now-retired laptop was five years old...a 200 MHz Fujitsu. I miss it.)

and Ive got 2 questions if someone could help me out with:

1. when online i keep getting bombarded with annoying pop-up messenger ads..is there any way to block these?

Go to ZoneLabs.com and download their free version of Zone Alarm. It's a personal firewall that will help stave off those annoyances.

2. My computer has a dvd/cd-rw drive...how do i burn music onto a cd? Is there a certain program i have to buy or do i simply go to a place like grokster.com and just download it there? It seems like after I download the song that I would need to do something else as well.

Depends on whether you want to burn a regular music CD (with CDA WAV files) that any regular CD player can read, or whether you want to just burn your MP3 files to CD for play on a CD player that can handle MPEG-3 files. If the former, then yes, you will need software to do that. If the latter, then all you need to do is drag & drop the files and write.

1. Go to www.mozilla.org and download mozilla, then go to Preferences -> Privacy and Security -> Popups and choose to "block unrequested popup windows."

2. Windows XP and properly configured Gnome 2.0 linux distributions let you drop and burn independent of other apps. If you have windows, a good commercial app for writing cds are ahead nero. on linux i use burncenter. i don't know about Macs, if that's what you have.

1. Even apart from pop up ads, you should have a firewall & anti-virus program. Symantec Norton has one, which includes a feature which can stop pop up ads.
http://www.symantec.com/product/

(This is a well known and popular one, pretty user friendly, but there are others, such as McAffee)

2. Your computer may have a stripped down version of something like Roxio's "Easy CD creator", which may or may not be sufficient, you can also buy their full version.

http://www.roxio.com

(Here also, there are others, but the "easy CD creator" seems to be what they put on most computers, so I assume it's one of the most popular ones).

Mozilla Ping.
Mozilla is a solid, fast, full-featured browser that runs identically on XP as well as the freeware unixes. Been running popup-free since version 1.1...

Its not a very good one, its a compaq 2135us...it was cheap and ill only use it to type screenplays.

As for cd burning, its so i can burn onto a cd not for mp3. Know and cheap programs?

Stopzilla is a popup ad preventer you should try. It has a free trial program.
Zone alarm has a good free firewall but it does not stop popups.

MusicMatch Jukebox has a free version and I'm pretty sure it will still let you burn audio CDs. Very easy to use, and also a great program to keep up with your music files.

What kind of screenplays are you writing? I'm a writer too, primarily novels, but I'm starting to tinker with screenplays, too. I'm about a third through the first draft on my first script.

On the popups, you said MESSENGER. If you're talking about an instant messaging program like Microsoft Messenger, or Yahoo! Messenger, or AOL Instant Messenger, etc., most of them have a setting that will let you ignore anyone who's not on your list of friends. Look around in the preferences.

If you're talking about popup ads, ZoneAlarm will help you out pretty well with that, and will also give you firewall protection. There are also a number of dedicated popup-ad-killer programs. Just do a Google search and you'll turn up several.

Lemme also put in a plug for Opera. Very nice browser. I used Netscape forever, finally switched to Internet Explorer, and have been on that so long that I didn't realize such neat new features were available in other browsers. Click here for Opera.

Congrats on the new notebook. Sure would hate to do without mine, especially as a writer. Lets me move to wherever I'm most comfortable and creative at any given moment.

k... Nero's tops for burning cds (you can snag it here. It aint free, but it's cheaper than roxio.

I'm pretty sure the full version of zone alarm (you'll want a firewall anyway) has a popup blocker built in, but there are a few others out there. Youll want to run adaware too, to get rid of all the spyware - ther'e another little cleaner prog out there but i dont recall the name offhand. (wish i could be more helpful, but my main pc runs linux, i just have win2k on my "game box")

You may be thinking of Spybot. AdAware is OK, but I think Spybot is a little better. I use it almost daily.

Im just starting out, I had a friend burn a copy of Final Draft for me, Ive mosly written shorts and Im now venturing into screenplays

As far as popups, its just popup spam and not thru a messenger service.

Check out: http://www.panicware.com/

Their free pop-up stopper stops about 90% of popup ads.
