ITHACA -- Ithaca College's 108th Commencement Exercise saw degrees conferred on 1,350 graduates. One of the commencement speakers, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream co-founder Ben Cohen, was cheered and also booed when he criticized national spending priorities and the war in Iraq during his address to the graduates.

Cohen was booed by some members of the audience when he criticized the recent war in Iraq, and chastised the U.S. government for spending billions more on nuclear weapons and defense than feeding and housing the nation's poorest people...the two former ice cream moguls ...sold their publicly traded company to Dutch conglomerate Unilever in 2000 for $326 million

Typical limosine liberal. Attacking big corporations while living in mansions.

If he cares so much about the poor, why doesn't he donate his entire fortune to charity?

"It will be hard because our president has messed up the economy," said Ayana Shabazz, who received her degree Sunday in Spanish, when asked about finding a full-time job.

Face it, young lady. Your degree is in a field only slightly more useful than pottery. Your options are basically teacher (which requires an advanced degree) and translator. And given your political bent, I'm betting you plan on going into teaching.

Lucas Shapiro, an Ithaca resident who graduated from Ithaca's Alternative Community School, said he's lucky. He has a job lined up in New York City as the national youth organizer for the Democratic Socialists of America. "This was the only (job) I applied for," he said.

Geez, this kid is from Ithaca, went to college in Ithaca and became a professional socialist. Who would have thunk it?

Then again, its hardly surprising when one considers a previous article that noted: “In most places, youngsters spend their summers camping, or at the mountains or the beach. In Ithaca, they learn how to become social activists.”

Ithaca is the City of Evil.

"It will be hard because our president has messed up the economy," said Ayana Shabazz, who received her degree Sunday in Spanish, when asked about finding a full-time job.

She said she has a summer job translating, but beyond that she hasn't secured any prospects.

Ummm....newsflash, Ayana: you aren't guaranteed a full-time job when you graduate. And, President Bush didn't mess up the economy. Notice how she says "our president" when she wants to blame something on him.

BWAHAHAHAH! She would've had MARGINALLY better luck getting a job with an English degree. What in the name of all that is good is she going to do with a SPANISH degree? HA!

Figures the nitwit tries to blame her incredible lack of foresight on our Commander in Chief - after all, it's the Ithacan Way, which is perfectly fitting when you're in the...

Yep, it's W's fault her family name screams of racial hypersensitivity and she chose a major for which there is no employment prospect.

When last year IC made the announcement of Cohen as speaker, there was criticism because apparently IC's policy is to have non-political graduation speakers.

The administration claimed that Cohen was being invited in his role as philanthropist rather than as a political activist.

Another lie, right up there with the administration's claim that they don't take politics into account when hiring professors. This at a school with 94% Democrats and Greens and 6% Republicans and conservatives. See article about a recent study on this subject:

Oh for heavens sake, even the students are irate at these tired old liberals at their commencements. It seems to be worse this year, as many liberals are getting roundly booed by the graduates.

Why should graduates want to listen to the same old negative mantra of these has beens, instead of something uplifting and positive.

Lucas Shapiro, always available for Bush-bashing:
Ithaca College student Lucas Shapiro told the crowd that the college's Student Government Association last week voted by a 3-1 margin to approve a resolution opposing a preemptive military strike on Iraq, on the heels of a similar resolution passed by Ithaca's Common Council.

It appears each graduation this season is to be outdoing the speaker before you. My son graduated this weekend from Texas Tech and the person that got the standing ovation was the 84 year old graduate who had to prospone his degree for World War II. He was an inspiration, so was the blind man with the seeing eye dog, and the lady with a nerve disorder who had to have an aid all through college. Those are the ones who deserve the special attention- along with my son who worked all through school on Student Loans.....

I don't know about that, but their hypocrisy was on display in a 20/20 report a few years ago.

The always excellent John Stossel pointed out that, while they claim their packaging is dioxin free, the ice cream itself actually has dioxin.

My thoughts exactly. One after the other. They ARE tired, old and DULL just using the stage to spout their politics. Pretty cheap considering they are supposed to be giving a speech for the grads and not the cameras. But...it IS typical because like everything else...these people are all about Me, Myself and I and to tell with the grads...even if it IS their own special event. It's old, it's boring and they are doing it so much nobody is really listening anymore.

Lucas Shapiro, an Ithaca resident who graduated from Ithaca's Alternative Community School

I looked into his high school:

“ACS does not depend on report cards or letter grades, but rather written evaluations”

“Students are taught to peacefully coexist with each other and the staff, but on the occasions that conflicts do arise, we work out the problems verbally. We have a mediation committee, and failing that, the Alternative Community Court. Students and teachers are on a much more equal basis with each other. To show this mutual respect, students call teachers by their first names.”

From their info page.

And this is from the Bottom Line, the weekly update for parents (bottom of page):

5/17 Ithaca's first ever Celebration of World Fair Trade Day

The Ithaca Fair Trade Coalition (co-founded by ACS senior Claire Stoscheck) will host Ithaca's first Annual Fair Trade Fair to celebrate World Fair Trade Day, an international day dedicated to highlighting fair trade initiatives. There will be FREE Ben & Jerry's ice cream & fair trade coffee to take home. Additionally, there will be art, dance, children's music (Vit. L), & games for kids all ages.

The purpose of the Fair is to educate consumers on Fair Trade issues & to feature local businesses that sell fair trade items, as well as to celebrate fair trade as a positive alternative to traditional trading practices that often result in social and economic injustice. Fair trade is a viable & socially just trade practice, which insures that producers receive a fair wage, decent working conditions, and the environment is not degraded in the process of production.

The Ithaca Fair Trade Coalition is a project of the Committee on US-Latin American Relations (CUSLAR), the Finger Lakes Group of the Sierra Club, and Ten Thousand Villages. Its mission is to inform people in the Ithaca area on issues of fair trade & to promote fairly traded goods.”

Trust me. Ithaca College wears this comment like a badge of honor.

Their faculty is overwhelmingly liberal. In fact, the chair of their politics department basically said we "deserved" September 11 and they proudly published her essay about in the alumni magazine.

Members of the administration were also involved in funding an illegal trip by a faculty member to Iraq.

Not only won't they be embarrased, they'll probably name her a "distinguished alumni" someday.

They can ask Ben & Jerry if they could help make their famous Rainforest Crunch Ice Cream. After all its never out of demand, now is it? Apparently four years of college haven't spurred Ithaca's graduates to ask a pair of wealthy liberals if its time for them to go into the ice cream business. Somehow that would have been an appropriate theme for the City Of The Empire Strikes Back! You know, an appreciation for self reliance and all. Sitting around waiting for President Bush to depart office strikes me as a loser idea.

With over 30 million Spanish speakers in this country, a degree in Spanish is only slightly more marketable than a degree in say, TV Viewing.
