There's always a lot of discussion about Dr. Atkins and his diet recomendations here on FR.
Here's some more.
I hope this isn't a duplicate. I searched many different ways and didn't find anything.

The 132 men and women in the VA study started out weighing an average of 286 pounds. After six months, those on the Atkins diet had lost an average of 12.8 pounds, I'ld think they'ld loose more then that in 6 months...

I have given up carbs for about three weeks now and lost fifteen pounds. It really isn't that hard.
The cravings for DONUTS, PIZZA, ICE CREAM, CHOCOLATE MALTS, PANCAKES WITH MAPLE SYRUP and such things eventually go away.
I hope.

Time to fix the food pyramid.

I've lost nearly 50 lbs in the past 3.5 months following Atkins.

...the high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate Atkins diet... They mean, the normal-protein, normal-fat, low carbohydrate Atkins diet.
The only reason people gain the weight back is that they return to their old eating habits. Doing Atkins right means no more sugar, ever. No more pasta, ever. No more potatoes, ever. No more white bread, ever. People just won't follow the rules - they say, "Just this once won't hurt", then it turns into twice, then ten times, then they are right back where they used to be.

9.6-12.5 pounds in 6 months? Crikes, sleeping pills would do better than that; these are apparently industrial-strength eaters involved in this study.

I have found that if you stay away from sugar, you will not gain your weight back.
Sugar is the enemy.

said both studies indicate that people do lose more weight on Atkins, "but the difference is not great." ... those on the Atkins diet had lost an average of 12.8 pounds, those on the low-fat diet 4.2.
the Atkins group lost 15.4 pounds, the group on the standard diet 7.
Double or triple the weight loss...not that great a difference!

Sounds like everyone on the Atkins diet has been cheating a lot. I know 4 different guys who have lost 50+ lbs on that diet in the last 6 months.

The 132 men and women in the VA study started out weighing an average of 286 pounds. After six months, those on the Atkins diet had lost an average of 12.8 pounds, those on the low-fat diet 4.2. The other study involved 63 participants who weighed an average of 217 pounds at the start. After six months, the Atkins group lost 15.4 pounds, the group on the standard diet 7. I must say I question whether these people are actually ON the Atkins diet. I would really have to examine exactly what they are eating.
Both my hubby and I started Atkins about a year ago. I had lost around 30-35 pounds at six months; he had lost around 40-45. Now, my husband is able to lose weight if he can control his mindless eating (and the Atkins diet seemed to cut down on that a lot); I, on the other hand, have a very difficult time losing weight, but it did come off in this diet.
Also, we added some fruit to our diet early on, and I was drinking a non-fat mocha a day, and we still were losing a lot of weight. So, I would really have to look at what they were eating to believe that after six months they had only lost 12 pounds.
One side note: both my hubby and I have pretty much stood still on our weight loss after about 7 months. Anyone else experience this? We haven't gained it back, but haven't lost any more either.

I have done pre-gastric by-pass counseling and all of them have the 'Atkins Diet' on their list of failed weight loss plans. They all lost massive amounts of weight, but gained it back over the years.
I too am curious about the long term continued weight loss and other diseases like cancer (colon & breast to be specific), bone density, hypertension and renal function in the long run.
And yeah, I do agree, the refined carbs are not good. The standard for adequate brain function (glucose) is 50% total kcal from CHO, preferably high fiber sources.

Atkins Diet - another dose of snake oil for the desperate, pushing the only real way for long term weight loss (aerobic and anaerobic exercise) into the backround.
Some people are so lazy, if given the choice between eating dog crap and exercise to lose weight, they'd chose the former...

My own body vindicates the ketosis aspects of the Atkins technique....and it's about time to hit it again after eating too much Birthday Cake for my son's third last weekend.
I can drop 10 elbows in 2 weeks on strict protein and leafy greens and sugar cheats.

I've kept 15 pounds off with a modified, not strictly followed low carb diet. The weight was lost in 1997-8 with straight Atkins. I could stand to lose a bit more, but haven't buckled down and cut out the bread and potatoes recently.

We had spaghetti at our house three times last week.

I don't know, I just can't imagine not eating pizza, donuts, burgers (with the bun) candy, or ice cream.
Of course my diet consists of a lot of sports and eating what I want. So I guess everyone gives up something.
