City residents will likely have to start digging deeper this weekend.
The City Council plans to vote Wednesday on a measure to raise the citys portion of the sales tax on Sunday, when a state hike also takes effect, NY1 has learned. Altogether, the sales tax in the five boroughs will rise from 8.25 percent to 8.625 percent.
The agreement between Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the City Council marks a turnaround for Speaker Gifford Miller, who had wanted to delay the vote for a month as he sought assurances the new revenue would be used for what he called essential city services.
If the deal passes, sources say, the city will restore from $50 million to $75 million in proposed cuts to social services. A plan to double recycling fines will also be dropped.

Cripes, it's amazing how quickly one's work can be undone! It took Rudy years to get respect back for the city. Now they are just pissing it away. Friggin' amazing.

What happened to the old "I Love New York" tourism promo? Someone must come up with a catchy tune for the under-taxed tourist.

NYC will need the money to pay for stuff like
this.

This sucks! They want people to spend more money to help the economy but how can you when you have so much sales tax. You end up going shopping in states where there is no sales tax! New York City will never recover this way!

Next Monday will be Day 1 of my self-imposed "Brown-Bg Lunch" campaign. I won't spend another nickel in this city if I can avoid it, even on expenses that are paid by my company.

I miss Rudy!!! I want him back! I lived in Queens during Rudy's tenure and was able to vote for him twice. I never regretted it! I will be moving back to Queens at the end of July and I can assure you I WILL NOT BE VOTING FOR BLOOMBERG!

You are smart! Lunch is too expensive there anyway! You figure at least $10.00 a day if you get a sandwich and a soda! That's insane. The only way you get a cheap lunch is if your company has a cafeteria and then you can get a cheap lunch. But not many companies do that!
