ACLU: Remove Bible from granite memorial
WorldNetDaily ^ | 5/30/03 | WND

Posted on 05/30/2003 5:47:24 PM PDT by Mark Felton

Group says display of book near courthouse could offend those practicing other religions

The American Civil Liberties Union is asking that a Bible be removed from a granite memorial that sits in front of a Texas courthouse because it might offend non-Christians, reports the Houston Chronicle.

County Judge Robert Eckels told the Houston Chronicle he would review the request but doesn't think the memorial is a "violation of the separation of church and state or sponsorship of a religious activity."

The memorial has been in front of the Harris County Civil Courts Building for 47 years, according to the Chronicle, and was built in 1956 to honor a business owner who helped the poor. It is maintained by a local mission group.

Randall Kallinen, an attorney with the ACLU, says he thinks the presence of the Bible sends a message that those practicing other faiths aren't welcome in the courthouse.

What about all the other religions who see that Bible? Does that mean they're not welcome or their religion is not respected?" he asked, according to the Houston paper. "Civil courts are supposed to be fair and nonprejudicial. Putting one religion ahead of the other doesn't seem to be fair or nonprejudicial."

Activists from American Gay Atheists vandalized the memorial in the late 1980s, according to the Chronicle, breaking the glass case housing the Bible and replacing it with a pornographic magazine.

The ACLU has been involved in many attempts to remove any hint of religious symbols from public property and buildings, including several displays of the Ten Commandments.

In January, the group lost a battle to have a display of the Ten Commandments removed from a Kentucky courthouse.

Or what about those who can't read? Surely there should be no books of any kind in memorials. But what of those who can't see? Perhaps they would be offended by a monument for the sighted . . . . ad nauseam.

I could live with this if the ACLU would weigh in against all Muslim religious privileges in our school, burkas on drivers licenses, and other such things which are religious, in my face, and offensive in the sense that they are intrusive. But they won't.

They mean someone like that IDIOT woman they're defending that wants her drivers license photo taken with her burka on.

For 47 years the evil Christians have gotten away with this horror.

What planet are these folks from???

What is it with all these other "groups" that hate our Bible, why?? Our Judicial system need to get some balls and kick out all these frivolous lawsuites. Let the Bible be there, add the corrupt koran if you want to and the jewish book too. Just leave America alone!

Typical ACLU. Instead of asking how other religions can act to enjoy the rights they share with Christianity, the ACLU asks how Christianity's rights can be taken away.

Um...this is America.....since when do people who don't like to "see" the Bible rule? They can go elsewhere. Now. It's a free country. No one will stop them from leaving. If you come to America you come and you follow OUR RULES....not the rules of wherever THEY came from. This country was founded with Biblical principles at its base (yes, it was.) The ACLU and friends can go find another better country to live in if they don't like it here. /RANT

Gee, whatever happened to "diversity is our greatest strength"? Does that apply to everything BUT Christianity?

Seriously, the A.C.L.U. was started by a Communist. A Communist is ALWAYS an atheist. Always. Since the U.S. is becoming more decadent, they are see opportunity to turn our nation from God. What's working well for them is the nonsense of "imposing ones beliefs on another." Having a Bible or anything else in view imposes nothing. It's simply part of our history.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the ACLU was a Soviet Front and directed from Moscow. Check out this letter from ACLU founder Roger Baldwin to Emma Goldman. Note the comment that Berkman has a study "pretty well in hand." Berkman, a business partner of Goldman at the time, served 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of Henry Frick (Berkman shot Frick three times and stabbed him twice).

After HUAC exposed the ACLU as a Soviet Front, the organization detached itself from Soviet control. But the same criminals were still behind it. The goal of the ACLU always has been to undermine law enforcement and Christianity in order to enrich and protect organized crime Defending the little guy and freedom is a front.

Who funds it today? The trial lawyer/porno/illegal drug industry is a good guess.

Since we are talking about a display in front of a courthouse, I smell a settlement. Think we could offer to remove the Bible display if the ACLU agrees to renounce its (members) U.S. citizenship and move to France?

This ACLU doofus is an utter hypocrite.

To use his logic, every statue of a black American offends and excludes white Americans, and vice versa. We should have not black American statues of people entering courthouses would not feel welcome if they are not of the same race.

"What about all the other religions who see that Bible? Does that mean they're not welcome or their religion is not respected?" he asked,

This is known as a strawman argument. There is nothing offensive about the memorial.

ACLU is funded by leftists who are rich. Think of the stereotypical elitist snobs from the East Coast ... mor especifically in Manhattan. The one thing Liberal wasps and liberal Jews (JINOs and CINOs) agree on is hatred for the 'bible-thumpers'; it's a real source of strength for the ALCU, that hatred.

Yup.

The Religious Right in Washington State: A Special Report
Prepared for the American Civil Liberties Union

. . . .activists of the religious right won control of the state Republican Convention in 1992 and adopted a platform with planks that startled many mainstream citizens, including opposition to "channeling" and witchcraft in the public schools . . .the religious right's methods of operation often are antithetical to our nation's tradition of democratic pluralism . . .Their language is filled with images of warfare and too often demonizes their political opponents . . .www.aclu-wa.org

"I'd really like to know where it states in the Constitution that people have the right to not be "offended"."

You are correct. It aint there.

You have to understand that these ACLU (Anti-Christian Leftist Union) are people who are trying to get NAMBLA march in gay parades and LGT groups march in traditional St Pat's parades; they want govt to fund all defense attorney (welfare for lawyers, huh); they want 13 year olds to get abortions without *any* parental involvement; they want to give needles to drug uses, on taxpayer money! They want pornographers to get full 1st amendment protection, on the internet; they think sex trade lap dancing has higher constituional 1st amendment proetction than political issue advertising.

They are almost IMPOSSIBLE to offend, when it comes to degradation of society!!!!

They are *not* offended at all by this work of art, IMHO. it's a big hypocritical act. they have to dig and find the one or two atheist curmudgeons in the crowd when 99% of the other are *happy* for example to have a prayer before a football game or a commencement. And here, 47 years - no problem for the thousands who've gone in and out. I've seen a lot *worse* art in front of buildings. ... They just want to destroy the nexus between religion and society. It's not a 'tolerance' agenda, it's an atheist agenda.

JMHO.

Funny .............

The ACLU is much. much more willing to DEMAND we (US taxpayers) continue to fund "art" that defecates on the Virgin Mary, pisses on the crucifx, and portrays Christ as a homesexual in essays or hangs condoms in a library ....

See, "that" (cursing and blaspheming MY religion with taxpayer money displayed in a taxpayer-funded museum)is "freedom of expression" and complaining about THAT blasphemy is "repression" and "intolerance", but this "carved piece of art" (a Bible is certainly a work of art) is "forced" presentation of a "religion" to a "non-Christian" by "the government."

Yeah, right.
