One million form letters are making their way to Republican-voting households across California, seeking money and signatures in support of a recall campaign against Gov. Gray Davis.

While Republicans want to project a unified front against the second-term Democrat, however, the politics behind this letter-writing campaign is eroding their sense of unity.

More disinformation from the liberal press. They will do anything to protect Davis and discredit the recall effort. All these articles are carefully planned. I understand that this weekend the pro Davis forces are going to be out in force trying to get signatures on official looking documents asking that Davis NOT be recalled. The ideal is to get people to sign these documents thinking they are signing a document calling for Davis's recall. The Dems have no shane.

California: Dems won't vow to keep names off recall ballot. "Internal chaos" in party

SACRAMENTO - As Democrats crank up a campaign to defeat the recall of Gov. Gray Davis, they face internal chaos because the party's other statewide officeholders are unwilling to rule out appearing on the same ballot.

Two months ago, Art Torres, California Democratic Party chairman, asked leading Democrats to pledge to unify behind the governor by not seeking to replace him if the recall reaches voters. No one has taken him up.

"If there is going to be a pledge," Torres said this week, "they need to make it publicly and so far no one has done that."

Maggie, your rat party in Kaliland is the one that is ready to rip each other up in a rabid rat fight.

I generally do not agree with recalls. Once the people have spoken, the election is final. If Davis is guilty of anything, let the Cali House and Senate impeach/convict him, and let the Court remove him from office. Otherwise, don't be a sore loser. Also, I would not want to set a precedent. We should be careful with actions like this, for they can potentially be turned against us later. Davis will meet his doom at the next election. And FReepers, lets not renom Simon again. What a waste of time!!!

Well we who live and work in CA cannot afford to wait 31/2 years for another election. Davis lied about the budget deficit, about raising taxes and fees. While folks like you criticize CA from afar let us take out our own trash. Say hello to my brother in Hotlanta for me will ya. See they caught the Atlanta Olympic bomber! Congrats!

Some people liken California's recall election to the Lemon Law. Just as a consumer can return a defective car, Californians can remove a defective officer from office when enough people decide he's detrimental. CA reelected Davis only to learn after the election about the size of the budget deficit he exacerbated and his intention to tax everything without solving any real problems.

The CA legislature will not impeach Davis, so a court cannot remove him. There's nothing wrong with setting a precedent in removing Davis; after all, he already set a precedent in the scale of his corruption, malfeasance, and damage to Californians. Besides, recalls have been attempted (unsuccessfully) against most of CA's governors, and successful recalls have removed various other local officials in most places in CA; it's nothing new here.

Simon will not be renominated for a recall election, and nor will anyone else. There is no nomination process, and just about any Californian can run.

The recall election may take place 60-110 days after enough signatures are submitted. (up to 30 days to certify the signatures, plus 60-80 days until the special election unless the certification is within 180 days of a regular significant election)
