FBI speeds gun purchase background checks
WASHINGTON The FBI has improved its ability to respond quickly to gun dealer requests for criminal background checks, with only 9 percent of the transactions now facing delays, the Justice Department reported recently.
Improvements in technology have reduced the number of false matches in the National Crime Information Center system, raising the immediate response rate from a 71 percent average in early 2001 to 91 percent in 2002.
The improvement means that most gun dealers now can get information over the phone about whether a firearms purchaser is a convicted felon or other person prohibited from buying one. In the past, many dealers had to wait for an FBI agent to review records and make a final determination.
In a statement, Attorney General John Ashcroft said the improvements "are helping make our country safer by barring access to firearms by felons, illegal aliens and others who cannot legally own guns."
To reduce the remaining 9 percent of cases in which there are delays, the Justice Department is attempting to improve the completeness of criminal history records at both the state and federal levels. The department will distribute $48 million to help states improve records in 2003.
The report provides updated figures about the operations of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, which was established in November 1998 and is an outgrowth of the 10-year-old Brady Act gun control law.
The system processed 8.9 million background checks in 2001, with 125,000 denials of permission to purchase a gun. In 2002, the numbers were 8.4 million checks and 121,000 denials.
Since its inception through the end of 2002, more than 36 million background checks have been done with 563,000 denials.

Though I'm less than pleased that the Nanny State has to give us permission to buy firearms, this report has some value: For example, it demonstrates that in 4 years and 2 months (11/98-12/02), 35.5 million guns were been sold by dealers - I'll bet that a certain tyranny-minded faction in DC and various state capitols is crapping in its drawers at this knowledge!
It is also instructive that only 1.56% of all applicants were denied - and I'll bet that the majority of those weren't criminals, just people with erroneous records or who shared a name with a real criminal.

I'm through buying but I love to hear what others are getting. I used to be a member of the thousand rounds a month club. That couldn't last as long as I wanted.

I keep saying I'm through buying but I really need to upgrade.
I have a couple that I have absolutely no use for. They aren't interesting, they aren't good shooters and I think for a couple of bucks, I can get something I really like.
The first one to go should be this snub Ruger Security Six that I would love to trade for a stainless tiny snub, again, in .357.
Maybe I should just keep it and use it for a car hideout.

Ammo Heads UP
I stopped at WallyWorld this morning to pick up a couple of 9mm white boxes and noticed that all their Federal Hydroshock was marked WAY DOWN. Nearly 50% off. They were out of .40 and 9mm but still had a few .45, 38sp and lots of .380.
I don't know if this was a single store markdown or all of the stores.

I was arrested last year on a felony charge (long story, I was in the right but had a GUN! Horrors! Guess who got arrested.) No charges filed by the DA. I was seriously afraid that the arrest would show up on the insta-check, but it didn't, to my surprise. Who knows, though, it might later sometime.
