Stand by your twang

TAMMY Wynette's Stand By Your Man has been voted the best country song of all time.

A list of the 100 top country music songs ranked the classic ahead of George Jones' He Stopped Loving Her Today and Crazy by Patsy Cline. The list was started when Country Music Television in the US asked critics, historians and journalists to identify the genre's greatest songs.

They came up with 600 titles and those went to members of the US Country Music Association.

The criteria were loose. Statistics such as sales didn't matter, said CMT's Kaye Zusmann, only the "emotional, visceral connection people have to a song".

Wynette's song was "the proto-typical country song", Ms Zusmann said. "It has everything."

The song resurfaced in 1992 during one of Bill Clinton's sex scandals.

"I'm not sitting here as some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette," Hillary Clinton said at the time.

Wynette demanded an apology, saying Mrs Clinton had "offended every true country music fan".

Wynette later performed at a Clinton fundraiser.

Other singers to feature prominently in the music list were country greats Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash.

Didn't Hillary slide in a pile by saying somethng bad about this song? I can't remember the details, but I seem to remember she disshed this song in the early 90's.

Good song but there is no "all-time" anything, especially in music and movies, etc.
