Genesis 12:3 was speaking to Abram, and what seems to be over looked is what was said in verse 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

v3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."

I'm guessing you are refering to the nation that was founded by those fleeing religous persucution, they that sought to follow the dictates of the God of Israel in a new land.
