Ridiculous man-hating lesbians

Dear Women's Studies Professor:

I recently read the comments you made to a local newspaper during Womyn's Herstory Month (WHM), which, I believe, used to be referred to as "March." It may surprise you to know that I agree with your assertion that the university used bad judgement in sponsoring a concert by the rapper Ludacris during WHM. I don't think there is ever a good time to have the rapper sing about "bi***es" and  "hos" in the name of campus diversity.

I also agreed when you told the paper that it was unfortunate that many people view feminists as "ridiculous man-hating lesbians." Your suggestion that feminists should employ humor more often in order to combat that stereotype is certainly correct. Along those lines, I hope you don't mind me writing to make a few more suggestions which will help to erode that unfortunate stereotype.

First of all, I think that it was probably a mistake when you decided to hang posters around campus in protest of the Ludacris concert. I don't question your general right to hang posters but, instead, your specific choice in this instance. I am referring to one that you created which shows a woman kicking a man in the face in an apparent show of women's "empowerment." While mine is only one opinion, I think that others will agree that such a poster could actually promote the view of feminists as "ridiculous man-hating lesbians."

I was also disappointed that you paid for the posters with university funds. I also don't think it was wise to print "brought to you by the Women's Resource Center" on the bottom of the poster. The Center should combat misogyny, not promote mrogyny. Think about it.

For the time being, those are the only suggestions I have for you. However, I do hope you will pass on some advice to your colleagues who teach in Women's Studies. For example, I understand that one of your fellow professors nearly jeopardized her job five years ago when she prevented a male student from signing up for her Women's Studies class. Apparently, she thought it was safe to tell him that the class was only for women. When the male student in question told me this, I thought he was kidding. That was before his story was confirmed by another of your liberal colleagues, a self-described male feminist.

Fortunately for the professor involved, the student was too intimidated to pursue a claim against her. But unfortunately, the professor's conduct reinforced the stereotype that feminists are, in your words, "ridiculous man-hating lesbians."

In addition to allowing them to sign up for your women's studies classes, it is important to be sensitive to the needs of the few men who actually do enroll. For example, I was told by the lone male student in a "Women and Literature" class that the professor stated (during her lecture) that after all her troubles with men she now wished she had "converted" to lesbianism when she was younger. I didn't believe that one either until it was confirmed by a woman taking the class. And there were no remaining doubts after I read the professor's autobiography in which she spent countless pages attacking all of her former husbands. I hate to say it again, but this kind of behavior leads many to believe that feminists are merely "ridiculous man-hating lesbians."

I also want to point out that there are certain limitations on a professor's right to kick male students out of Women Studies classes. I am in possession of a note written by the aforementioned "Women in Literature" professor to the lone male student in the class (there were 36 females enrolled). In the note, the professor asks the student to "reconsider (his) decision to take (the) class" for allegedly making comments which were "critical of the class subject matter."

Interestingly, the professor admits that she did not hear the comments but says nonetheless that they were "at odds with the purpose of the class," "completely unacceptable," and "damag(ing) the atmosphere (she was) working hard to create." Of course, he dropped the class for fear of failing. Now he thinks all feminists are "ridiculous man-hating lesbians."

But enough of the behavior of  individual professors in your program. I also want you to reconsider some of the projects you undertake as a group. For example, I noticed that you petitioned against a campus appearance by the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and that you later decided to sponsor a beauty pageant for obese women. Men's general preference for the former over the latter is probably here to stay. Better move on to another issue.

Finally, I was wondering if you could explain something: I heard one of your feminist colleagues take a pretty strong stand against breast implants for women the other day at lunch. I think she called them patriarchal and an unfamiliar term derived from phallus. After I reminded her that she was a gay activist who supports sex changes for men, I asked whether there was a contradiction. After all, men don't even have breasts to begin with. She told me "our contradictions make us human."

Maybe so. But her prejudices sure make her look ridiculous. But I agree that it doesn't mean she's a lesbian.

Seems to me their posters were censored. Normally, they'd show a man being kicked not in the face, but much lower. Man-haters they are. (and you know who you are, too).

Too bad they aren't man-eaters. But then again the NOW dowagers wouldn't be caught dead shopping at Victoria's Secrets. :)

Reminds me of the scene in Chasing Amy...

Banky: Alright, now see this? This is a four-way road, OK? And dead in the center is a crisp, new, hundred dollar bill. Now, at the end of each of these streets are four people, OK? Are you following?

Holden: Yeah.

Banky: Good. Over here, we have a male-affectionate, easy to get along with, non-political agenda lesbian. Down here, we have a man-hating, angry as f---, agenda of rage, bitter dyke. Over here, we got Santa Claus, and up here the Easter Bunny. Which one is going to get to the hundred dollar bill first?

Holden: What is this supposed to prove?

Banky: No, I'm serious. This is a serious exercise. It's like an SAT question. Which one is going to get to the hundred dollar bill first? The male-friendly lesbian, the man-hating dyke, Santa Claus, or the Easter bunny?

Holden: The man-hating dyke.

Banky: Good. Why?

Holden: I don't know.

Banky: Because the other three are figments of your f-ing imagination!

LOL!

I saw the movie, actually, and didn't remember that. Sounds about right as a generality, but I'll note that I'm looking forward to reading Tammy Bruce's new book, as she seems to be "a male-affectionate, easy to get along with, non-political agenda lesbian."

Tammy Bruce is a gay conservative as is Andrew Sullivan. Now most of us don't approve of who they sleep with but unlike the radical gays, they're not pushing their lifestyle in our faces. My view is as long as a gay person doesn't make the personal the political, his or her personal relationship is their business.

You and I share the same view. Another is Al Rentell, a gay Republican talk show host I get a chance to listen to occasionally (when I'm in the car around 8pm for whatever reason)... He's never been the kind to push his lifestyle on others and has a lot to say about those who do.

Did you see Tammy Bruce's talk about her first book on booktv.org/cspan2?

Very articulate lady with well-reasoned arguments, imo. (Never in a million years thought that I'd agree with so much that an admitted pro-choice, lesbian, ex-president of LA Chapter of NOW had to say! She calls PC what it is, and got in some well-placed rebuttals to the audience arguments, too. Granted, she was speaking at a collge, but the number of over-the-top angry students in that audience made me think that those students obviously had to be attending college thanks to mommy and daddy paying the bills; otherwise, they wouldn't have so much time on their hands to get that angry.) I haven't yet her books, but I intend to get them both.

...a self-described male feminist.

Is that what male homosexuals are calling themselves these days?

I'm reading Tammy Bruce's book right now. She is EXTREMELY critical of the "gay agenda" and all that entails. She also writes about how ridiculous the whole gay "pride" thing is maintaining that your sexuality is something that just is and not something to be "proud" of. She's a very intelligent woman.

So Andrew Sullivan is a sodomite. I did not know that. I had his blog bookmarked, it is now history, I just deleted it. I refuse to view social, moral, and religious issues through his perverted spectacles. His opinions, or world view, I definitely am no longer interested in. Thanks for the info.

You're probably the only conservative in America that didn't know that.

wow, that's pretty impressive...

so the fact that he likes men suddenly makes all of his opinions, that are good enough not only for you to agree with but to even bookmark, irrelevant.

sometimes i wonder where conservatives get such a bad rap with some people</sarcasm>

Tammy Bruce's books should be required for all conservatives. They show why the homo agenda is a threat to our children.
