Study: Smoking in movies encourages teens to take up cigarettes

London-AP -- A new study suggests teens who watch actors smoke in movies are three times more likely to light up than their peers who watch less on-screen smoking.

Many studies have linked smoking on the big screen with increased adolescent smoking, but this is the first to assess children before they take up the habit and track them over time.

Some experts say the study provides the strongest evidence to date that smoking depicted in movies encourages adolescents to start smoking. Others remain unconvinced.

The Motion Picture Association of America, which rates movies and represents the movie industry, had no immediate comment.

The study was funded by the U-S National Cancer Institute, and was published today on the Web site of The Lancet medical journal.

EXACTLY!
It reminds of the family oriented ban on Playboy magazine that 7-11 stores started 20 years ago. You could still pick up a pack a cigs and some beer. They didn't worry about killing people, as long as you didn't damage their minds!
(Yes I am a smoker)

Thanks, I'm smoking one for you right now. No movie ever encouraged me to to smoke or become a lesbian.

Well at least it was conducted by an unbiased party.

Oh, BS!

I don't think it is. Younger teeenagers, boys especially but also girls, tend to imitate the hero type of characters they see on TV and movies. Particularly so if that hero type is scoring with women all over the place. Remember the days of Jimmy Dean and us guys turning up the back of our shirt collars to look cool like him, and get the chicks? (and also getting expelled from school for doing so?)

Prehistoric animals depended on movies to get the others "hot".

Well, if that's true, then I guess sex in movies incourages teens to have sex, and drinking in movies causes teen to drink, and killing in movies causes teen to kill.

Guess it's best to just outlaw movies. :o)

Why hasn't anybody done a study about how movies teach teenagers how to abuse firearms?
