Exhibit 5: One other ''attack'' on black America bears mentioning -- by Nike. By giving $90 million to a high school kid who has yet to put a ball through an NBA hoop, the athletic shoe company has assured that countless thousands of black kids (and others) will figure dribbling a ball, not studying math or science, is the surest way to riches and glory.

Not if their parents and their community impress upon them that this is not the way to go.

Gov. Jeb Bush staunchly opposes the automatic restoration of rights

Really? and what RIGHTS did those criminals take away from others? In most cases FELONS have murdered - losing the "right" to vote should go with the terrority.

Besides, Democrats and Socialists would overtake this country if felons could vote.

Next.

It was about The New York Times believing it had a potential superstar, but badly misjudging his suicide-bomber maliciousness. The paper's efforts to help Blair were not unlike the baseball teams that kept giving repeat drug offender Strawberry new chances -- not because of his race but his perceived ability.

... this is as far as I read. Strawberry, like him or not, has ability, not PERCEIVED, but provable. Blair had been suspect for years and was kept at the paper BECAUSE he was a minority, not because of ANY proven ability.

Blavck children dont give a whit about studying now..this company has done nothing but highlight a talented child, guess you dont see anything good about that?

Your arguments are baseless.

Does the author really think that the NYT was just hiring the best writer they could find regardless of race and it was based entirely on merit. Oh, OK I guess they regularly hire college drop-outs to be reporters based on their past writings at their former college newspaper. Uh huh!

When they make handguns illegal here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia I guess I am going to lose my right to vote. Somehow I cannot figure why we continue to punish after the sentence of imprisonment/probation is over. If a criminal did something so bad then they still should be in jail, IMHO.

This is not exactly true, while the Jayson Blair case may not be directly relevant to Black America, it is indicative of the insulting arrogance of affirmative action and the excessive lengths that white liberals think they need to go to, to find a capable Black person.

The failure of minorities (and particularly American born blacks) to achieve is CULTURAL and self-inflicted. This is well documented and it is not racist to point out facts.

Yeah but where's the money in that? (sarcasm)

Part of the problem is that you have so many people (like the Reveruuuunnndd Jackson) charging every little thing to racism by simply noting that someone involved is a "person of color". It doesn't matter what the real merits of the case or situation are, it must be racism.

Of course now you have all these piddly incidents being painted as major affronts, so when something real comes along, it ends up getting watered down in all of these stupid little episodes that really don't have anything racist about them.

Of course, this article is one of those examples. That is, if you immediately question the use of that authors first sentence, because maybe you see some kind of accusation of racism come down the pike every five minutes and you happen to be a little skeptical...now you too are a racist, or at least a "problem" contributing to racism.

As I frequently propose in the case of Affirmative Action (AA) we should make a list of supporters of AA. Then, when they need a skilled specialist (a brain surgeon, for instance) they should be compelled by law to select one who skated through brain-surgeon-school on an AA pass.

Need a bridge built? Use an AA structural engineer.

Want a building designed? An AA architect.

If AA "graduates" are good enough for the rest of us, they surely should be good enough for the AA advocates...

Affirmative action is crap and I would not want it applied to me if I were a minority. Everything you accomplish would always be credited to affirmative action (with a wink and a nod,of course). I saw it in the large company where I used to work. Who would want that?

I have a question. Why aren't Asians included in affirmative action? Some don't even speak English well,if at all,and they aren't included. Blacks who grow up in this country speaking Englis are included. Why??

So, according to this race baiter we have to change what works for society because he says blacks are too 'different' than whites. I think his is the racist attitude.

"But that isn't affirmative action. Blair didn't appear to be underqualified at all; just the opposite."

Oh, so affirmative action IS about hiring the underqualified because of race.

Yes, racism takes on a more subtle form.

It is disguised as offering 'help' to the 'downtrodden' with programs such as affirmative action.

The paper's efforts to help Blair were not unlike the baseball teams that kept giving repeat drug offender Strawberry new chances -- not because of his race but his perceived ability.

Wrong.  The paper continuously looked the other way, never addressing his shortcomings until it grew so big that it could be denied no longer.  Blair was given a shot at the paper specifically through an affirmative action internship program and if the paper had bothered to check his credentials at all, they'd have found he didn't even graduate U of MD.

Some prominent black Floridians recently called for a boycott of key state industries to protest the policy denying diplomas to high school seniors who fail the state's new, tougher assessment test, even if they meet every other graduation requirement.

The policy disproportionately impacts black, poor and immigrant students.

You'd have to prove that the policy is designed to unfairly affect black/minority students.  The test, in fact, holds all students to the same standard and the prominent black Floridians are hoping to erase this standard.

Florida has the nation's most difficult gauntlet that former felons must run to regain their voting rights.

Florida has a voting restoration process in place that essentially requires proof that the felon is no longer on parole.  The state can't be expected to continually spoon feed those who have little interest in and less motivation to participate in our democratic functions.

Investigative reporter Greg Palast has documented the devastating effect of Florida's computerized purge of 94,000 allegedly ineligible voters prior to the 2000 election.

Greg "Theft of the Presidency" Palast is hardly a reliable source.  In fact, all that's been proven is that @1,700 convicted felons who'd had their right to vote automatically restored by another state, were taken off the rolls pending application for restoration in Florida.

By giving $90 million to a high school kid who has yet to put a ball through an NBA hoop, the athletic shoe company has assured that countless thousands of black kids (and others) will figure dribbling a ball, not studying math or science, is the surest way to riches and glory.

Yes, another cruel trick by corporate America to keep the brother down.  Interesting to see that Steinback has such a low opinion of the psyche of these foolish blacks that he takes it for granted that they'll throw away a good education, chasing that brass ring.  Yes, lucky for the poor, lowly black man that there's fine, upstanding, liberals to save them from the big bad Republicans.

Give yourself a self appreciative pat on the back Robert Steinback, for you truly are a Jane Goodall of America!
