If this country is so racist, how is it that a black man (Bill Clinton) was ever elected President?

I met a black yesterday who is one of the more friendly and less profane blacks in my hood. We started talking and after claiming to be a Christian he then said that the bible was used to keep blacks as slaves. He said Christianity came from Europe and was used to make blacks afraid of God so they wouldn't resist being slaves. I was amazed to have met an actual Jessie Jackson voodoo bible "christian".

Actually there is some truth to that statement. The Bible was used to justify slavery. Both to society in general, and to Christian slaves themselves.

I can believe that because the bible can be missused to justify just about anything. But Christianity is not about keeping blacks as slaves. Infact it says that all men are slaves either to sin or to God.

Yes it is sad to think of the Word of God being so abused as that but It sure happens. It is the same as the crusades and the witch trials.

The racial aspect of the Blair case, if there is one, is that the prospect of having a budding black star was so enticing that The Times bent too far to accommodate him.

Huh? Present any evidence of Blair's "budding stardom." He was reprimanded at every level, regularly criticized for lazy and sloppy work, failed to graduate from college, and even singled out by his immediate superiors and recommended for dismissal.

Is this one of those cases where the facts of the case can be altered as necessary to fit the point the author wants to make? That's Jayson Blair jounalism at its finest.

That's not the point - hell, for that money, I'd jump, too. But what it boils down to is that the NBA (and by extension, Nike) made the offer in the first place.

If this kid is the second coming of MJ (and from what I've seen, I refuse to believe it), then four years of college will make him that much better.

The fact that the League is so intent on watering down the quality of ball play in exchange for greater gate receipts will ultimately come back and bite them in the butt.

But there's a larger issue at play. When I talk to kids, all I hear is how they are going to be the next Kobe, or the next Michael, or the next Shaq. I never hear about the ones who will be the next Supreme Court Justice, or Legislator, or businessman, or even doctor or lawyer. All of those positions are more in reach (yes, if you include state Supreme Court and Legislative positions) than a position on an NBA team.

Notice the hypocrites in the NBA have finally done away with their "Stay In School" campaign. They finally realized how foolish they sounded.

Even if the League enacted an age floor of say 20, they would have a better situation on their hands. If a kid was THAT gung ho to play in the League, and didn't want to go to college, then he'd HAVE to go play minor league ball. The quality of ball-play in the NBA would certainly rise, and the constant BS about drafting kids out of high school would end pretty damn quick.

LeBron James just may make it to the next level and join the McGrady/Bryant elite. Then again, he may wash out and become yet another statistic.

As I frequently propose in the case of Affirmative Action (AA) we should make a list of supporters of AA. Then, when they need a skilled specialist (a brain surgeon, for instance) they should be compelled by law to select one who skated through brain-surgeon-school on an AA pass. Need a bridge built? Use an AA structural engineer.

Want a building designed? An AA architect.

If AA "graduates" are good enough for the rest of us, they surely should be good enough for the AA advocates...

Excellent idea! Let's take it to the next level though.

The next time a white/Asian person says they support affirmative action, tell them then that they should give up their job/spot in school/etc. to some minority, and they should take a crappier spot. After all, since they are the dominant race, they will be able to make up the difference anyway...
