Syphilis Cases On The Rise In Bay Area
Dr. Klausner: 'It's Absolutely An Epidemic'

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Doctors are calling it an epidemic. The number of people with syphilis in the Bay Area is skyrocketing.
NBC11's Marianne Favro reported on why there has been an increase in this sexually transmitted disease. Doctors attribute the increases in syphilis patients to several factors, including more effective treatments for AIDS and the popularity of Viagra.
In San Francisco, syphilis is spreading at an alarming rate.
"It's absolutely an epidemic. We've seen a steady increase and over 1,000 percent increase in the number of new cases," said Dr. Jeff Klausner.
The numbers say it all. In 1998, 41 people in San Francisco were diagnosed with the sexually transmitted disease. Last year, the number of cases skyrocketed to 494, Favro reported.
Doctors say the patients are mostly gay men and about 40 percent of them contracted syphilis after having sex with men they met on the Internet in sex chat rooms.
And doctors say Viagra has also played a role in the increase. "There is also a speed epidemic in the Bay Area. Taking speed is associated with erectile dysfunction, but with Viagra that is not a problem and these speed users have more partners and are less aware of their sexual health," Klausner said.
This epidemic is also raising another health concern in San Francisco. Doctors say people with syphilis are more susceptible to getting the AIDS virus, Favro said.
Ironically doctors say progress in fighting AIDS may also be behind this spike in syphilis.
"With successes in HIV therapy and new medications, gay men are more active and have more partners," Klausner said.
And more unprotected sex is why the San Francisco county health department is putting up posters throughout the city reminding people to get tested for syphilis. And to make it even easier to do that, this week the department launched this new Web site offering free and confidential syphilis testing (STDtest.org).
Santa Clara County has also seen an increase in syphilis, but the numbers are not as high. Syphilis is easily treated with penicillin but if left untreated, it can lead to heart, brain and nerve damage.

He (Dr. Klausner) is responsible for fanning the flames of homophobia by peddling bogus syphilis propaganda. Thirty-thousand ticking timebombs rained down on San Francisco's gay community in 1999. Dr. Jeckyll Klausner and his klan at STD Control Services were responsible. The end result? No proof of a syphilis increase. No proof! But a big spike in death threats in gay chat rooms at America Online. AND NOW QUARANTINE!!!
That's one of the basic tenets of liberalism - some group has been "victimized" and is therefore entitled to a handout, and anyone who opposes that handout must hate them.
Pretty much sounds like the freaks from act-up.
Yeah, that's just what we need.
Homosexuality is a mental disorder and they ought to be thrown into straitjackets, hospitalized in mental institutions, and treated with heavy doses of thorazin and lots of intensive psychotherapy.

The epidemic is probably almost entirely a gay problem, but you have to get several paragraphs in to find this out.
First contract syphillis, then AIDS, then onto Social Security Disability and years and years of medication, then hospitalizations, and then hospice. Oh, and billions in AIDS research, and ineffective public health programs pleading to change behaviors. I don't recall the tiny homosexual male minority thanking the hetero majority for paying for the direct consequences of their carefree lifestyle.

We just toss them in the trash. Our congregation knows better.
Now with gay marriage, they won't be able to get a divorce in their favor if partner is infected. They will have to catch AIDS if they want to keep being loved....
