I remain convinced that SH and his sons were killed on 3/19. Remember the article recently about his daughter who claimed not to have heard from any of them since then.
It serves our purposes to keep the myth going that he is alive. It gives us the excuse for Desert Scorpion. We are going door to door in search of the 3 missing aces and in doing so, are rooting out dozens if not hundreds of Ba'athists and confiscating their caches of weapons. If SH is assumed to be alive long enough, we'll have searched every house in Iraq and arrested every Ba'athist left in that country. We may have even been told by some of the captured leaders that he's dead, but since we have no proof, ignorance can still be claimed.
It also serves the purposes of the Ba'athists to keep the myth going that their fearless leader is still alive. Once they know their leader is dead, they know there is no hope for them to re-emerge as a ruling force in Iraq.
So the fiction continues as long as it serves the purposes of those with dogs in this fight.

Wow, I thought they would play this one out a few more days. I guess they were getting nervous that people were actually talking about it and they might have to substantiate it.
Why Saddam would come back from Belarus to drive in a car convoy near the Syrian border and talk on a sat phone is just beyond me! C'mon folks, lets start thinking here..
To: randita
I believe the opposite is true - if he were shown to be dead, the resistance would collapse.
I still do not understand why we cannot find and kill one of the doubles, and pass him off as Saddam. Where are all these doubles? Did they just disappear? Hmm...

someone should update the title of this thread to "were optimistic". What is most amazing to me is that US intelligence is really pushing their luck here. I mean, they are under pressure on the WMD intelligence front, let's not float these stories all the way up to the Senate Int'l Comittee so they go on the Sunday talk shows with it.

thanks, granite. I stand corrected.

'And King Abdullah of Jordan told a television interviewer that he understood Mr. Hussein had been traveling in the part of Iraq where the attack was reported to have occurred. '
He would know of course.

Love it. Love it being repeated on FNC also by Mara Liasson and Juan Williams, and having Brit and Kraut tag-team them.

The New York times asked the man in the street, Greg Packer, of Yankyers, NY, who said,
" I don't understand why we don't just put Dabney Coleman in a beret and a uniform and shoot him on TV. It would do the trick."

I am serious, I would substitute one of the doubles. Its the oldest intel trick in the book, what are our guys thinking?

I keep hearing these DemoBRAT senators and congresscritters saying that we shouldn't have gone to war with Iraq since Iraq doesn't have WMDs. But these same DemoBRATS were all over the place before the war in support of it, saying Hussein had the weapons. I think these DemoBRATS have a LOT of 'splaining to do! Were they lying when they said before the war that Hussein had the weapons, or are they just being mean spirited and partisan now?

Hopefully they don't say "yes it was Saddam" until close to July 4. Then we can celebrate it...:)

And King Abdullah of Jordan told a television interviewer that he understood Mr. Hussein had been traveling in the part of Iraq where the attack was reported to have occurred
This is either awesome disinformation on the part of King Abdullah and he is aiding our intel community
Or King Abdullah runs in suspicious circles and is privy to sources that make him far less than a friend.
