France to add green rights to constitution

The French cabinet this week backed plans to enshrine the right to a clean environment in the constitution, a step President Jacques Chirac said would raise green safeguards to the level of basic human rights.

The plans would enable officials to take action to stop environmental damage. Chirac said they would make environmental rights equal to France's 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man, which is incorporated in the constitution.

I'm glad the President of the United States has no such power. Constitutional amendments require that lots of thought go into them, because the process of ammending the constitution is so arduous. The constitution is not a place for fads.

I know first hand that the majority of the people in the French countryside do not care for their whacky liberal politicians. Good people, bad front men.

My suspicion is that this is a UN hatched plan to errode and eventually eliminate private land ownership, being carried out under the cover of "saving our environment" when nothing could be more distant from the truth.

Based on France's positions against Bush and America, you will see a whole lot of UN plans being hatched under the auspices of the French Government. The first shots fired in a froggy/Texan war.
