AUBURN, Maine (AP) A former state representative and candidate for governor is joining with a number of bar owners in an effort to overturn a new law that would ban smoking in bars and pool halls.

John Michael of Auburn has notified the Secretary of State's office of his intent to launch a ''people's veto,'' an attempt to get voters to overturn the law in a referendum.

Civil disobedience is the only way!!!!

The costs of trying to enforce the non-smoking laws would become prohibitive!!!

Smokers make up about 30% of the USA population and we're being banned? Blacks make up 13% of the population and we give 'em everything they want! What's wrong with this scenario?

BTW, Maine's economy is horrible. If this goes through, a lot of restaurant and tavern owners, etc. WILL go bust and things will just get worse.

''I just don't understand why certain types of people decide their morality needs to be pushed on everyone else in the world. We have enough government intervention in this country,'' Michael said.

Good for John Michael - I loved him in the gubernatorial debates, an iconoclast with a real sense of humor.

But I hope he pursues this from a property rights angle, since the libs have succeeded in redefining busybody-ism as morality and they have the media on their side.

Gee, I wonder if the Maine "Peoples" Alliance will come down in favor of this effort. Yeah, right.

One of them came to my door a few weeks ago, clipboard and chirpy little demeanor in hand for who knows what.

"Hi, I'm from the Maine People's Al-"

"Commies 'R Us? No thanks."

SLAM!

I had a warm glow for days.

So good to see you, SheLion!

It's indeed good news, hoping to see more of it, hadn't heard about Delaware changing it's tune.

I can't imagine me or any one who loves to smoke not being able to buy tobacco products

OMG, I'd be up in arms. Who am I kidding, I'm up in arms
now as Florida's smoking ban goes into effect on July 1.

What's even more puzzling is that many of these types would encourage the legalization of marijuana and other drugs.

Actually it's not, The reason why is because they are liberal-socialist-communist who hate corporations and the corporations of the tobacco industry are(partially through their own actions or more precisely inactions) an easy target.

Notice they are not exactly for the legalization of Marijuana or other drugs but instead they are for the decrimminalization of drugs. There is a big difference between the two.

If drugs were legalized and they were distributed by corporations like Philip Morris they would quickly change their toon, Well unless the corporation doing the distributing was Ben & Jerrys or Time Warner.

Oh yes! One of my very favorite places to eat were forced into going smoke free in 1999. We didn't go back, because we felt why should we spend our money at places that do not accomodate us....

They almost closed their doors when a year later, the owner invested in a very expensive liquor license. They were able to open up the smoking section again.

It has since changed owners, all new renovation with a beautiful glass enclosed non-smoking room, and in the bar/restaurant area, huge smoke eaters are on the ceiling. You have to look to see if anyone is smoking, because the smoke eaters are wonderful.

The new owner said if they make him go smoke free, he will have to shut his doors. I believe that over 70% of his customers are smokers, because I hardly ever see anyone using the non-smoking room.

And if they make him go smoke free, will Augusta reimburse him for the 4 huge smoke eaters and for the money he spent to make a beautiful glass enclosed non-smoking room? I think not. There is no justice.

So good to see you, SheLion!

Great seeing you, too, Madame Dufarge. I have been out on the riding mower cutting the grass. It has been way too hot, but it cooled down enough now, that I can get out there and do my work. :)

Remember that 17 million that was found to be missing from the Maine budget..........did they ever find it? Someone said he thinks the old Guv King used it to buy his spify new motor home. LOL!

What with our economy, and all that money missing, sounds to me like there is some stinkers at work in Augusta. And they try to put a red mark on smokers to hide their OWN in inaccuracies.

Hey Great Dane! Good seeing you, too!

I just heard that the smoking ban was shot down in Denver. That's a great win for personal freedoms out there. I hope it spreads all over the US.

GUV DAVIS.......FIND A NEW JOB YET?

On one of the talk shows last week, one man said you could play football in the NY City bars now, they are that empty. Good old BloomingIdiot is screwing New York like so many of the lawmakers today.

Well, Florida is also known as Denture Heaven. All the old folks end up there. And I no longer support the AARP, because they, too, have turned on the smokers. They are probably working with the anti's in Florida to get that law passed. :(

Exactly. I believe that we have the underbelly in America, and the ones living down there are working hard to really slam it to the true Americans.

Have you noticed how everything we were brought up to believe is right, is now wrong? And what we were brought up to believe was wrong, is now right? Well, you can't teach an old dog new tricks and I still have my own beliefs that I grew up with.

Yea, that's another pimple on the azz of Maine. The newspeople sure shut up about putting them in print lately. I guess they were getting too many truths that they didn't like to hear. Ah..ain't life grand for those on welfare? A chicken on every plate and two brand new pick up trucks in the "door yard."

But it doesn't matter - after all, it was for "the children."
