***Fox Movie Channel Cancels Charlie Chan to be Politically Correct***
stardate: 0306.30
Posted on 06/30/2003 5:52:20 PM PDT by The Wizard
In what has to be the most yellow streak of broadcasting in years, the Fox movie channel has canceled the colection of Charlie Chan films because they were afraid a few folks might not understand that Stephin Fetchit was a ROLE played by an actor....
It a gutless move that ranks up there with the other great politically correct moves that show America has turned into a liberal pond of weakkneed corporations under extortion by the likes of jesse jackass and al sharpy sharpton, the Fox movie channel restored the films to perfection, advertised them for weeks, and pulled them because some blacks might be offended by the actions of a single character....
What the hell is America coming too when you can't show a black without a college education.

I suggest you cancel your Fox movie channel, to let them know we don't approve of political correctness in movies.

I don't agree. I have Aristocats for my grandaughter and there's a terrible depiction of a siamese cat which I wish that they had deleted from the movie. It adds nothing to the plot. I put myself in the place of an asian three year old.

Dumb and Dumber is a prime example. Can you imagine if that movie was about two blacks? The producer would have been shot and killed.

Fox showing Reality TV that features skateboarders dislocating their elbows, blowing out their knees, and bashing their heads is perfectly good and OK. But Charlie Chan is bad and wrong. Yeah, that makes sense (/sarcasm).

PUH-LEEZE!
Yeah, the Siamese cat depicted in a "Aristocats" is such a racist stereotype that your granddaughter is gonna traumatize her, and leave a festering, racist bigot, eh?
How come only guilty whites are worried about racist stereotypes and making sure they don't offend anyone of another pigment?
Gimme a break. Fox's cowardly pulling of the movies is a joke. It's a kneejerk reaction to kneejerk radical liberals complaints and guilty-white-liberal hand-wringers...
Grow up. There's no right to be unoffended in this country, or in life, and you and everyone else ought to wake up to that. 99% of all comedy is based on cruelty or mockery at the expense of other's - at someone else being poked fun at, made fun of, being ridiculed. It's a part of human nature, and you and your all thin-skinned compadres need to get a thicker skin and grow the he!! up.
I don't think any orientals' heads exploded because of the Siamese cat depicted in "Aristocats" just like no black person is going to die because they see "Song of the South" - yet Disney is still holding this wonderful movie away from the public because of the Rev. Jesse Jacka@@ and his PUSH shriekers.
That's what I have to say to all of you, "Grow the he!! up."

I didn't know Stepin Fetchit (sp?) was in Charlie Chan movies.
I remember him from the Will Rogers movie "Steamboat Round the Bend". A really good movie, for 1935. It was released after Rogers was killed in a plane crash with Willey Post in Alaska.
I happen to know something about the making of the movie. Rogers was way ahead of his time in the line of ad libing lines in movies. In 'Bend, Rogers had a great time in a private contest with Fetchit to think up funny lines to add to the movie. And Fetchit, I think, beat Will Rogers with the line (when Rogers had lassoed a guy off a dock from a moving steamboat and drug him through the water pretty dramatically) asked the almost drowned guy "could I get you somethin, maybe a glass of water?".
Funny stuff. Fetchit was paid well, and lived grand. I think with a private cheaufer (probably white) and limo.

Wrong Name!!!! The correct appellation is, "Al 'Give That Fat Little Rodent Faced Race Hustler a Poke Chop' Sharpton". And we won't discuss the scumbag's role in the lynching of an orthodox Jew from Australia, as I recall. That would be politically infra dig.

when you log onto their site, a popup window comes up and this is what it says:
Fox Movie Channel will discontinue the broadcast of the Charlie Chan mystery films.
Originally restored to meet the requests of mystery fans and film preservation buffs, Fox Movie Channel scheduled these films in a showcase intended to illustrate the positive aspects of these movies such as the complex story lines/ characters and Charlie Chan's great intellect. Additionally, numerous subscribers to Fox Movie Channel, as well as film historians, have long requested that Fox Movie Channel broadcast these films.
However, Fox Movie Channel has been made aware that the Charlie Chan films may contain situations or depictions that are sensitive to some viewers. Fox Movie Channel realizes that these historic films were produced at a time where racial sensitivities were not as they are today. As a result of the public response to the airing of these films, Fox Movie Channel will remove them from the schedule.
In the hope that this action will evoke discussion about the progress made in our modern, multicultural society, we invite you to please click CONTACT US to send us your thoughts on the matter.

You know, someone needs to invent a gizmo that replaces Black stereotypes in old movies with ignorant hillbilly stereotypes. Then you can have the exact same stuff, but it'll be okay!
To: The Wizard
That really sucks. I had two of those movies set to record on my DVR tonight. I just switched the channel and found Twelve O'Clock High. Thanks for the headsup!

I didn't know Stepin Fetchit (sp?) was in Charlie Chan movies. He wasn't. The stereotyped Black chauffeur in the Charlie Chan series was played most often by Willie Best, who specialized in sleepy, under-motivated servant types and was, I believe, known by the sobriquet "Sleep 'N' Eat". For a marvelous account of his career, and that of Stepin Fetchit and other African-American actors of Hollywood's Golden Age, see film critic Donald Bogle's pioneering study, "Toms, Coons, Mullatos, Mammies and Bucks".

To: lawgirl
"As a result of the public response to the airing of these films, Fox Movie Channel will remove them from the schedule. " I see no problem with this. There were enough complaints that Fox decided that it would be bad for business to air the movies. I am sure that their sponsors and advertizers were also feeling the heat.
To: The Wizard
Next they should probably ban Breakfast at Tiffany's. Andy Rooney plays the landlord, and if it isn't racial stereotyping, I don't know what is. That being said, we should all grow thicker skins.

well they are only hearing one side of the story. Who knows- for every one vote to take it off the air, there might be 5 votes to keep it on the air. I didn't know they were considering cancelling it or I'd have sent in my vote when the PC police were sending in theirs.

Is this why Amos 'n' Andy isn't on anymore? (sarcasm) You're being sarcastic, but that's exactly why Amos and Andy isn't shown on TV anymore. Amos and Andy was absolutely hilarious.
I've been able to rent Amos and Andy videos at Blockbuster.
I think I'll try to find them at the video rental store. It's been about 10 years since I've last rented them. Hope that they haven't axed them from Blockbuster as well.

You could respect and laugh _with_ A&A - compared to disregarding and laughing _at_ the braying, detestable fools you find on television today.

diversity = divisiveness.
divisiveness begets discrimination (being able to discriminate, as in telling the difference between two things)
discrimination = racism
racism is politically incorrect
the Nazis invented political correctness
the Nazis also were very keen on diversity..........

In the hope that this action will evoke discussion about the progress made in our modern, multicultural society,
progress? So mass censorship is progress. How PC.
the Charlie Chan films may contain situations or depictions that are sensitive to some viewers.
So a small minority can control things now....oh right...just like the Dems in the Senate.
We seem to win a few battles here and there, but we are losing the PC war.

I don't understand Fox. I usually watch Fox News, but from its inception, the Fox tv network has had nothing but garbage. Almost everything on the alphabet channels is better. The only good thing that Fox ever did was cancelling "Married with Children". They still have "The Simpsons", though.

As an Irish person I hope they stop showing all those old movies with the funny Irish drunk and the "thick Mick" cop with the heavy brogue.

It was not a "remake" of "Beverly Hillbillies" that was in the works (remember the motion picture version a few years ago?) but rather one of those "reality shows" in which genuine poor rural people were going to be placed in a mansion and gawked at by the general population as they dealt with unfamiliar circumstances. That nasty little project deserved to die.

What I wrote to the sniveling bastards:
I am MOST DISTRESSED to hear that you have cancelled your broadcasts of the Charlie Chan movies.
I was VERY MUCH looking forward to watching them.
We, in the non-imbecile corner seek to rely on Fox broadcasting to provide the audience with what we want,
and not what the Liberal Elite say we may have.
I hope that you will SERIOUSLY reconsider this misguided decision, or I will have to SERIOUSLY reconsider my
brand loyalty to all things FOX.
Including, but not limited to, Fox 5, Fox News, and the NY Post.
Sincerely,
Jessica O'Cxxxxx
