No school shooting in this country has EVER been stopped by an ARMED TEACHER.

How could we? We don't allow teachers to be armed in our schools. However, a better question remains:

How many school shootings could have been prevented or minimized by allowing teachers to be armed?

And I certainly agree that it's critical the thugs not know who's carrying.

Very few, I'm afraid. Teachers are (by and large) raving, antigun liberals. They'd sooner handle a live rattlesnake than a loaded gun. The benefit that would accrue is to folks in the extreme minority of Education (like me) who do in fact have the wherewithal, training and experience to make a difference in case the unthinkable becomes awful reality. But, that's all.

How soon we forget about people like the principle who held a shooter at bay with a handgun until police arrived.

I agree. I watched Linda Vester today and never saw so many whiney anti gun freaks.. How many lives would have been saved at Columbine if a teacher had been armed?

Unfortunately, you're probably right about the extent that it would help.

But to turn the antis' statement on its ear: If it saves one child...

It is legal in my state for teachers to carry.

I'm a teacher, and I am packing pretty much everywhere except at work, because it is prohibited there. Strange how we guard our money with guns, but not our children.

Email to Brit Hume, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Tony Snow, Roger Ailes, Fox News Channel:

Gentlemen of Fox News

We watch only Fox News Channel, belong to the NRA and want to know why you've rigged the arming teachers poll on your website.

Arming teachers--arming pilots, arming citizens, etc.--will effect the sentiment of George Washington that the presence of firearms everywhere will stifle the urge towards lawlessness.

Look at the scientific research of Dr. John Lott (More Guns, Less Crime, etc.) and see the reality vs. your rigged myth.

Stop your liberalistic propaganda or we simply cease to watch your programming.

You are apparently no different than CNN and CBS.

I had a teacher who’d throw chalkboard erasers at kids. I can just imagine that guy packing heat. It would be a .44 Mag. for sure.

Seriously though, I’d say yes under certain circumstances. I wouldn’t want my kids going to a school where teachers were compelled to pack heat to begin with. But, such schools are out there and if you want teacher to teach there, you should allow them to defend themselves.

Many moons ago perhaps, but not today. The school grounds have become a sanctuary for femininity and PC-ness. Real men need not apply. In fact, real men who might think their ability to defend themselves and others from a crazed madman as something that comes quite naturally, are creepy.

What kind of sheep shoots back?

Yes. While sub-teaching about '88 in one Dallas high school and what they now call a middle school, I recieved a death threat in each one. Both in class. Both negroes. Both drug muscular. One a convicted violent criminal, the other appearing to be high on drugs, rap sheet unknown.

(I have met a 19 y.o. 10th grader, gentle, very stupid, and much larger than I.

IMHO, had I not been a larger 6'1" / 59" shouldered 245#, seething at such trash, and firm of grip forcing eye to eye each time - quite contrary to "school policy", they could/would have attacked me, endangering other kids as they initiated what would become shocking, overwhelming violence controlling them.

One should not wait to ascertain whether a predatory bad actor perp is armed and demonstrating "intent" to use it given the FBI 7 yard rule.

When "KIDS" actually threaten other children or staff with injury or death, shoot 'em.

Felony "injury to a child" laws must be clearly excepted to allow for righteous shoots.

"In fact, real men who might think their ability to defend themselves and others from a crazed madman as something that comes quite naturally, are creepy."

LOL! This is exactly the feedback I have gotten at nearly every school in which I've taught for the last 15 years. They usually get over it once they get to know me. Usually, but not always. There are a few extreme liberals who still really REALLY hate my guts, but lack the guts themselves, to say so to my face. As for the rest, well: A couple of years ago, I was my school social studies Teacher of the Year.

Still, when I find myself staying late to grade papers, I find myself inadvertently alerting those still in the building when I'm planning on leaving. Usually somebody just "happens to drop by my class and ASK." Then when I hit the door, there's a whole gaggle of female teachers (and a few guys) waiting. I think they think my car has a whole arsenal hidden in case of trouble (I don't and never have had to keep a gun in my car, simply because I've never had any real trouble even in the inner city) and I gather they have reached this conclusion from reading my numerous pro gun letters to the editor in the Miami Herald.
