9 nations ask county to accept ID cards

Mexican credential already recognized

By Oscar Avila
Tribune staff reporter

July 3, 2003

The consuls general of nine Latin American nations on Wednesday demanded that Cook County adopt a controversial plan to recognize ID cards issued by their governments.

The card, known in Spanish as the matricula consular, is especially valuable to undocumented immigrants who often do not have ID cards because they are ineligible for driver's licenses.

The emissaries are backing a proposal by County Commissioner Roberto Maldonado (D-Chicago) that would accept cards issued by Latin American nations.

Cook County, like Chicago and other U.S. cities, already accepts Mexican ID cards to conduct business, such as accessing emergency medical care.

"The matricula consular will make the life of citizens from Latin American countries easier and more reasonable," said Alexandre Addor-Neto, the consul general of Brazil in Chicago.

Addor-Neto was joined by the consuls general of Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The foreign consuls will start meeting with Cook County commissioners later this month in an effort to garner support, Maldonado said.

But several members of Congress and other advocates of reduced immigration have criticized foreign consuls for aggressively lobbying cities and counties.

In recent weeks, lawmakers including U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Calif.) have introduced legislation to curtail their acceptance by state or federal governments.

Tom Pfeifer, a spokesman for Gallegly, said he isn't surprised that consuls in Chicago are lobbying for the same privileges as their Mexican counterparts.

I hope Cook County agrees to recognize my credentials as the Official Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Wideawake.

I'll need to ascertain that status before I'm able to commit crimes with impunity there.

The border will be busier than usual. How many cross every day (approximately?). 1000? A tidal wave is coming, and many of them will be pregnant so they can apply for welfare. They don't have to apply for medical care, they get that free already, and NOT just emergency care, they get the whole enchilada.

I'm waiting to see how Mr. Bush reacts to this. He panders shamelessly to Mexico, now what?

Seems to me we should tell these consuls that we already recognize their governments' passports with validly issued visas. Creation of secondary documents is just superfluous, bureaucratic paperwork.

If we cut out the freebies given to ILLEGAL ALIENS then they would not come here.

Somebody needs to investigate whether Mexico recognizes or allows illegal aliens from those countries to use their ID cards. How is an illegal alien from Guatemala dealt with in southern Mexico? What happens if, for some bizarre reason, I choose to illegally enter Mexico. Am I afforded free health care, in state tuition? Are my progeny automatically Mexican citizens if born there?

And just why might they be "ineligible"?

Could it be......
they are criminals?
Or do they simply prefer the Get Out of Jail Free cards over taking a driver's test?

Wow, what a coincidence! A County Commissioner named Roberto Maldonado intoduces a proposal that only Latinos would benefit from. A Latino elected official helping his fellow Latinos - we better get used to seeing more and more of this as the United States becomes more balkanized with each passing day.

The rationale is so insane it'll make you want to tear your hair out.

They can't get driver's licenses because they have no green card, passport, paper documentation, etc. IOW, they got in illegally.

So this way they can get an ID (basically without much proof of who they really are) to present as adequate identification to apply for a drivers license and anything else they can suck out of this country like the leeches they are.

Believe it or not, even after 9/11/01 these loathsome criminal squatters can get driver's licenses in Pennsylvania, Delaware, North Carolina, Tennessee, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Idaho, Washington state, Oregon, Utah and New Mexico, mainly because Washington, D.C. has done nothing to stop this insanity nationwide. Splendid "homeland security."

They want the life of latin american citizens made easier, so keep them in their respective countries. That's easy and much easier than traveling without documentation and entering into other nations illegally. The matricula consular should never be accepted here, let them show a passport or visa, the matricula is for those who have no right to be out of their own borders.

Yep, 5,000 or more.

The average daily catch for the Border Patrol last year here in Cochise County was 430. That means on any given day 800 to 1700 made the home run. And we only have eighty miles of border here.

Wouldn't these cards automatically identify you as an illegal alien? Then just showing this card for identification should make it easy for the INS to pick them up and deport them. They are already admitting they're illegal.
