ROCKVILE, Md. (AP) - Former Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose reached a deal with the county ethics commission Tuesday that clears the way for him to write a book and pursue a movie project about the sniper investigation, his attorney said.
Moose resigned last month, but his departure did not resolve the legal dispute over his book about the three-week manhunt following the sniper attacks that terrorized the Washington area last fall.
The county ethics commission had argued Moose could not write his book - even if he had resigned - saying he would be unfairly profiting from his office.
But Moose reached an agreement Tuesday that ends the county's opposition to the book and movie deals, said his lawyer, Ronald Karp. Moose agreed to drop a federal lawsuit against the county and his appeal of the ethics commission ruling, and also promised to give the county $4,250 he has been paid for the movie rights, Karp said.
"He is free to write the book, he is free to pursue the movie," Karp said.
Ethics Commission Chairwoman Elizabeth Kellar was not immediately available for comment, nor was county attorney Judd Garrett.
Moose remains on active duty with the Air National Guard and was not available for comment.
Moose signed a book deal in January with publisher E.P. Dutton for a reported $170,000 advance for "Three Weeks in October: The Manhunt for the Serial Sniper."
Sniper suspects John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo have been linked to 20 shootings, including 13 deaths, in Virginia, Maryland, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Washington D.C. Both face the death penalty.

Show me da money!!
I think Morgan Freeman will play Moose, lisp and all.
Who didn't know during the sniper events that Moose would do this?
A leopord never changes his spots.

For the book tour, Moose will travel in a big white van.
To: RedBloodedAmerican
I hope that the relatives of the people whom Chief Moose helped kill through his incompetence and inaction will be able benefit from his book deal.

Maybe we need to caption his new book. How about "Three Weeks in October: what a good cop could have done in 3 days"
To: RedBloodedAmerican
I defended Moose when others criticized him. I'm ready for my crow. Does it ruin the spirit of the thing if I ask for "ala mode"?
At least we can celebrate his separation from law enforcement.

How about Living History II, it'll probably involve just about as much spin as Hillary's book. It's kindof a theme series...
Moose could find an 18 year old picture of himself for the cover.

I just don't understand justice in this World. There is ironic justice in this particular instance. so Moose gets $170,000 for his book that will not sell. After his tirade about the ethics commission not permitting him to profit from a book deal and his resignation, what possible chance does he have of ever getting another law enforcement position at such a high level? I would say somewhere between slim and none. He was making over $160,000 plus benefits as a police chief and gave it up for a one-time $170,000 deal. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but then no one has ever claimed that Moose is an intellectual giant.
To: RedBloodedAmerican
I'd like him to explain his "white NRA redneck in a white van" wild goose chase while he knew that it was two black males in a car.

I eat crow alot too. I knew of him from portland, knew a guy on the force there, so I had a heads up about him. You were right to give him a chance, I had hoped he was different when he moved east. I guess not. I was hoping that this situation (the sniper event) would be a chance for him to prove himself. Oh well.

It'll be just like Moby Dick but instead of a white whale, he's looking for a white van...

Makes good sense the first time. You know, what if the snipers wrote a book to tell the world that they told Chief Moose who they were the first day it happened? So will it be a race as to who gets their story out first?
To: connectthedots
I bet there are some places who would hire hm as their Chief. Daytona being one of them. I'm packing right now.

What a reprehensible little man. His wife is even more reprehensible than he is. I think she's the one really manipulating the levers behind the scenes, much like a small-time Hillary Clinton. At least now she'll be able to buy some of the antiques she covets.

Moose is still a racist and bigot. Pretty soon, he'll be able to buy some 'real antiques' for his lowlife, lib-dem activist b!tch wifey skank. Poetic justice would be to have him shipped to Iraq and train Iraqi police.
Affirmative racism at work.

Even if Morgan Freeman ever considered playing the role of Chief Moose, I'm sure he would turn it down once he read the line in the script where Moose speculates that the sniper may be a "disgrumbled employee" of Michael's Curtain Store.

"Embracing Diversity" and the PC nonsense that passes for criminal investigation these days gets people killed, as his handling of the sniper case so gruesomely illustrates. Frontloading or leap frogging of otherwise unqualified people into positions of great responsibility is a profound tragedy.
