But I've been thinking about learning how to shoot. It seems like a good idea.

It is a good idea. My dad told us as children that everyone, male or female, should be able to swim, ride a horse, change a tire, and shoot a firearm. He made sure we all learned. Oddly enough, I've had to do every one of those things when I didn't expect it. Sure made a difference in my comfort level!

There are courses geared especially for ladies who have never held a firearm. The NRA holds them regularly at local gun clubs on a rotating basis, and many good shooting ranges hold them too. Find your local shooting club and make inquiries. They will provide arms, ammunition, hearing protection, and all. And it's usually quite inexpensive.

Been thinking along the same lines myself.
I am not a "spring chicken" by any means and prefer older weapons. Have been looking around for old .03 Springfields, .303 British or the best of all, a M1 Garand.
These are getting very hard to find and what I have seen are very pricy and not in good shape.
Will probly settle for a 700 Remington chambered for 30.06.
Just think that I need something with a little more punch considering the world situation.

Get a Springfield Armory M1 Garand. They are still making them, or you could enroll in the Civilian Marksmanship Program and order a surplus M1 Garand from WW2 (up to 5 annually actually)

Good luck ... I love my 30-06

I read a story that The queen of england carries a small pistol in her purse. I wonder if President GWB (or any pres for that matter) carried a pistol?

Ooooooooo, I would love to see GW address our servicemen
wearing a service automatic, don't you know the libs would
get their pantys in a twist?
I imagine some world "leaders" would find it interesting too.

Not to mention that the .45ACP is a far better 1 shot stopper than the 9mm, hands down.
Plus its designed(ok, a long time ago), used(until our military went "wonder-nine" wacky) and built(mostly) right here in the USofA...
The 9mm parabellum is German...

If you're looking for .303s, be careful.

A lot of the "sporterized" ones have been rebarreled for .308. And if it's been rebarreled or a new bolt put in (or even if not) they often have headspace problems because the locking lugs are at the rear of the bolt.

And there are fake No. 5 jungle carbines making the rounds out there too. If you go with a good quality No. 4 that would probably be your best bet. But have a gunsmith check it out.

I collect .303s (have 5) and shoot them all (I keep no cats that catch no mice), but I find it best to reload for my best one (the Long Branch sniper rifle) and head size the brass only. Much more accurate that way (if a tad more difficult to extract).

Best way to get a Garand is join your local shooting club and participate in a qualifying .22 LR match to get into the Civilian Marksmanship Program. We got a very nice Garand still in the Cosmoline through the CMP, and the price is just nominal because they are distributing surplus from the govt.

Great minds travel the same channels and all that.

The CMP has a good newsletter too. That .30-'06 has a bit more recoil than the .303 or .308, but it sure is a sweet rifle!

Garands are available through the CMP program for under $500. Excellent/like new bolt actions can be had for under
$100, with most going for $150 up.

check out www.Cruffler.com

And the BBT (big brown truck) brings them right to your hot
little hands.

Mausers and Moisins, invite one into your home and the next
thing you know, the whole family is living with you.

Nope, not good. Not nearly enough. Everyone needs at least one sidearm and one rifle. And since there are serious attempts to make it difficult of impossible to buy them down the road, one of each of these should be stockpiled for each child one has or plans to have.

You can be very well-armed with a .30-06. The 1903 Springfield and the M1 Garand are both chambered in .30-06. Get the Remington 700, it's a great gun. You should also be able to find a used '03 Springfield at any gun store, and Springfield Armory is reintroducing the M1 Garand on a limited basis (but it's procey: be prepared to pay $900 - $1,100).

Get a Springfield Armory M1 Garand.

General Patton said it was the greatest weapon of war ever made.

It is my favorite. Straightest shooting visually sighted rifle anywhere. Of course, I have others...

Agreed, some folks out there are slackers. I like my mini 30 and my Winchester 12ga. and most especially the Ruger .357 single action, the only pistol I've been able to shoot accurately. I'm looking for more to keep the numbers up but I'm not so sure I'll put my resources to work to protect those who think personal safety is a function of government.

I would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone who owns arms to buy a good quality safe to keep them in.

A heavy duty 14 gun unit can be had from Wally world for around $300 on sale, just keep your eyes peeled.

I didn't for years, and lost all, ALL my family heirloom guns in a robbery. Now I have a safe, and infact will soon be buying another as I am running out of room.

Please don't let scum steal your heritage, keep it safe to pass on to your children, they may NEED it.
I doesn't hurt to keep them safe till then too.

NOTE: It's not just guns.

Yes, we're well-armed, and we're going to stay that way, but we've also got planes and boats.

American civilians own more private aircraft than all non-U.S. airforce's in the world, combined. The UN NWO types might think that a few suicidal jihadists are a "potent force" with which to be reckoned, but they haven't seen anything compared to what enraged American civilians could do (not that we'll ever have to, mind you, as our military needs no such help from us).

And navies? Private American civilians own 20,000 **TIMES** more salt-water boats than the largest ocean-going navy. Americans are are also pretty good with GPS's, computers, and timers; and we can legally buy fertilizer at every feed store and diesel fuel at every marina. So for you UN types, you do the math. Of course, our military needs no such help, but our civilian backup is one of those nice-to-have luxuries that come as a perk to living in the free-est, richest, most powerful nation to ever grace this planet.

Messing with us is simply **NOT** a wise career move.

I mean sheesh, leave us alone and we'll trade with the rest of the world. We'll donate more Dollars to world charities than anyone else can muster on an absolute level, and we'll provide techincal aid and expertise.

Why mess with that? Why go picking a fight with the one nation that controls enough nuclear devices, chemical munitions, and biological weapons to wipe out entire continents at our whim?

Who thinks of such ridiculous notions as prodding us by hijacking our our airliners and crashing down our own civilian buildings? What can be wrought from such annoyances besides the eventual wholesale destruction of those who so attack us?

Technology. We went to the Moon more than 3 decades ago, and the rest of the world still can't match even that old feat. Only a dozen nations have even managed to build their own nukes, something that we did more than half a century ago. Stealth?!

Economy. The U.S. is it. We've gone from 23% of the world's GDP in 1983 to 30% today. We're only 4% of this planet's population, yet we have more wealth than 60% of other countries combined. We fund research and development on mere whims. We've got more money in money market funds than most entire nations will ever even see.

Military. The U.S. is it. No other combination of forces even comes close. The full might of the Soviet forces and technology at their peak saw two very different proofs of the superiority of American power in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Food. No one produces or exports as much food as does the U.S. Food and money are crucial to winning extended wars of attrition.

At the present time, there is simply no deficiency to be exploited by our enemies against us. Not economic. Not with food. Not militarily.

And here's the punchline:

Ever **IF** an enemy could get by all of the above, then they'd face the most armed civilian population in history.

We've got more guns (see this thread's lead article). We've also got more civilian planes and boats than any other nation has torpedoes and anti-aircraft missiles.

Put simply: military options against the U.S. are not feasible at this time in history.

"I wish there were courses geared for men who would like to have better training."

Just what kind of training do you have in mind? If you want to be able to shoot an object about the size of a cantalope from a distance of six hundred yards, I suggest that you contact the NRA and inquire about Highpower Matches in your area. Those who participate in these matches would be happy to help you improve your marksmanship.

LOL! You must be a little bit older than I, they were starting to MAKE it when I came along, but it was all so new we called it "Current Events".

Seriously, I nearly died when my daughter came home and informed me that her history class was doing a "unit" on the Sixties. I never throw anything away, so for the day they did their presentations I got out my old hand-embroidered bell-bottom jeans (they fit her perfectly!), my dashiki, my Indian beaded headband, my coffee saucer sized peace medal, my cheap silver bangle bracelets, my fringed leather shoulder bag, and my Birkenstocks. We parted her long hair down the middle and braided it. Then we took her picture.

She was voted "most authentic" in her class. She was a SIGHT! (I can't believe I ever really wore that stuff. . . )

Fiddle Dee Dee! That .30-'06 has a bit more recoil than the .303 or .308 With all the machinery going back and forth, an M-1 actually has less felt recoil. On top of which, even the military is taking a second look at the 5.56mm. Not enough legs.

Hey Dan! Well, you of all persons should know that north of the bridge the figure is more like 20 guns per person. That's right ATF, I got 10 times the average right here in my home, and I'm on the low side of the median.

Kinda explains the low crime rate in the UP, don't it?
