I get about 50 spams or more a day. I find they are using "fake mailers" to send them from Hotmail. I've written to them and they say they can't do anything when it is not their customer. I think once you get on a list it is sold to any and everyone who will buy their lists

I get a lot of porn for men. I guess because they think I'm a man. There seems to be no way to stop them. I am so sick of it. :(

Try Mozilla 1.4. I've been using it for a while now to access my personal accounts from work. I also use it as my primary mail reader at home. It has trainable junk mail filters.

At first, you let it mark suspected junk mail without taking any other action. It will miss some spam and mis-mark non-spam in the beginning. As you manually mark and unmark messages, it will learn what is and isn't spam. After it's sufficiently trained, activate the junk controls for real and it will send suspected junk to a junk folder. After 2 weeks, junk messages are automatically erased. It may still miss a spam or two, but marking the offending pieces sends them off to the junk bin.

This is certainly easier than trying to craft clever filter rules in Outlook.

The only problem I have with Spamnet is the fact that it does not work with web-based e-mail. When I was travelling without a PC last week, and borrowed one to check e-mail, I had to sift through hundreds of pieces of spam manually, using the 10-at-a-time web interface on a slow dialup connection.

I've discovered that if you post your resume on Monster, HotJobs, etc - whatever e-mail address you use will be clogged with spam in a couple of days.

I browse with the http://www.mozilla.org mozilla browser (free as in beer) The built in mail reader has bayesian filtering. That means the mail reader learns what spam looks like. As SPAM evolves, the mail reader learns the changes. What you receive as non-SPAM pretty much does not change. After a few days, all SPAM is flagged as spam, and you can delete it with a key stroke. Bayesian filtering is the way to go. Black-lists and white-lists are too intensive. I'm too cheap to pay for something a computer should be able to do for free.

The free mozilla browser allows you to block pop-up windows.

That doesn't shock me. Too bad they aren't all job offers, eh? :-)

If any other Freepers have found a solution, please post here.

I can't claim to have found a "solution" to the spam problem, but I do several things as a palliative and for psychic pleasure:

1. Learn to read email headers. A necessary skill you must have in order to ...

2. Trace the source of your spam and complain to the relevant service provider.

3. Learn, live, love, subscribe to, and bookmark http://www.spews.org. They are the Jedi masters of spam prevention.

4. Don't buy anything advertised via spam.

5. If you see a name-brand product or service advertised via spam, email the legal department of that company with a full-header copy of the spam. I've had good results putting the kibosh on Asian spammers hawking pirated copies of Symantec and Microsoft software.

6. Never, NEVER reply to the spammer or put yourself on their "remove" list. Your "live" email address is like money to a spammer, and they will sell it to every other scumbag doing the same thing they are if you confirm that there is a human being at the other end of it.

You have to go in and unsubscribe to all of them. Granted, most of them come from two or three places, but you need to unsubscribe form each one. Then install Spybot and ZoneAlarm (free downloads) and you'll be spamless.

I use SPAM Assasin, you can download it for free here: http://au2.spamassassin.org/index.html It identifes SPAM by a points system, it "learns" from these email it examines. I can't tell you exactly how it works. BUT IT DOES WORK AND IT'S FREE.

I should be more precise. Verizon was the largest corporate contributor at $39,500. They paled in comparison to the lawyers associations, $925,500.

I just love how you cut to the chase and get it over with. Works for me. :-)

Had a package with Qwest, L/D and Internet (also stock), and they were good for quite some time, then spam started and I'd had enough. What really ticked me off was the thought they couldn't stop the spam, but could sell me software that would.

I support excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments for spammers.
