The state Senate on Tuesday shot down $3.7 billion in budget cuts contained in a Republican-driven spending plan, an expected action that underscored continuing divisions between and within the two parties.

The 26-13 vote on the measure -- opposed by the Senate's majority Democrats and one Republican -- marked the second GOP budget plan California lawmakers have defeated since the fiscal year began without a budget. Assembly Democrats killed a Republican plan on July 6.

We need cut spending deeper and stop this insane borrowing. Tom McClintock cast the "NO" vote. Maybe that makes him an odd bedfellow with the Democrats who also shot down his party's budget but he's heads and shoulders above the politicians in Sacramento. The rest of them are out of their depth on what needs to be done.

"urge the quick adoption of a budget that is not balanced on the backs of the poor"

It's not that they are opposed to climbing, and nesting on someones back....just not the poor's; at least not on TV.

What California needs right now is someone who is willing to make tough decisions. Right now, that state needs massive budget cuts, not liberal minded social programs. It needs leadership that can make clear that no government job is safe. it needs to evaluate every single government asset for potential sale. It needs to be prepared to at least major reforms, including the privatization of the state's school system. It needs a long term, bi-partisan plan to get the state budget into surplus, and use cash from asset sales to pay down debt. And finally, in 5 or 10 years time when the debt is down and surpluses are up, those surpluses must go back to taxpayers to boost the local economy.

Unfortunately, California, the home of Hollyweird and San Francisco, is largely run by a pack of RATS and RINOS, who make Ahnuld look like a viable conservative candidate in comparison to the rest of the people running the state. CA really needed responcible budget management before it got to this point, and now its here it needs drastic leadership to bail it out. I just hope, for the sake of the good folks of CA, that leaders step up to the plate.

Tom McClintock says that all we'd have to do is suspend the mandatory budget increases across the board, and hold the line for 18 months, and we'd be back in the black.
