Woman found dead in ditch near Slaton BY KERRY DRENNAN AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Rosa Palacio cannot imagine why anyone would want to harm her daughter, Cynthia, whom she described as kind-hearted, fun-loving and a devoted mother.
"Why? Why? Why her? I just want to know why," she said as she dabbed tears.
It was a noon newscast that prompted her to call the Sheriff's Office to see if the body found early Tuesday morning was that of 21-year-old Cynthia JoAnn Palacio.
"I started shaking," Rosa Palacio said. "I felt like something was wrong. I tried to ignore it. I didn't want to find out. I didn't want them to come over."
But later that afternoon, after checking photos of Cynthia as well as fingerprints, deputies confirmed Rosa's worst fears.
Investi ga tors are searching for answers to why Cyn thia's body was dumped naked from the waist down in a county bar ditch.
Sheriff's Capt. Bill Drewell said a woman driving near FM 41 and County Road 7800 just west of Slaton noticed the body and called authorities from a nearby house.
Drewell said the cause of death had not been determined Tuesday afternoon, but there were no visible signs of trauma.
"We believe the body was dumped out there in the early morning hours," he said.
Robert Uriegas, 25, Cynthia's older brother, said he suspects his sister's friends or acquaintances may be in volved.
"She just hung around with a bad crowd," he said. "We never knew where she was at. She was always just out and about."
Rosa Palacio said that although Cynthia's daughter, 2-year-old Davina, was her top priority, Cynthia maintained an active social life.
"She loved to party," Rosa Palacio said. "She was full of life ... she loved to dance, party, just laugh all the time. She was always full of life."
The last time she saw her daughter alive, Rosa Palacio said, was just before Cynthia went out for a night on the town Saturday.
"She thought I was mad at her. I wasn't mad at her. I just wanted her to stay home so I could take care of her," she said. "She always told me, 'Be nice to me you might never see me again.' "
Anyone with information about the death is encouraged to call the Sheriff's Office at 775-1406 during business hours or 775-1480 after 5 p.m., Drewell said.
"We never knew where she was at. She was always just out and about."
The statements are at odds, and now a child is left motherless. How tragic!
Translated: "She was a member of a bad crowd."
It never ceases to amaze me. Is it me, or are the reporters/journalists stupid, or are the investigators "Barney Fifes"? I can give you an answer why the body was naked from the waist down...Why the body was dumped...Has anyone ever heard of someone just carrying a body around for general purposes?
Aside from military operations where the recovery of the bodies of fellow Americans was attempted where possible, or when those of the enemy were wanted for intelligence or accountability purposes, not generally.
But there are always those who collect parts or portions thereof, ears in particular, or little fingers, a practice known to some of the Indio tribes of Mexican Sonora. And there are those such as Milwaukee's late Jeffery Dahmer, who have another motivation.
