Hamblin quits radio show
Denver Post ^ | Michael Booth

Syndicated talk-radio host and local columnist Ken Hamblin has walked off his national radio program with American View syndicators, alleging that they failed to "perform financially" and reach a new contract.

Hamblin's last show was Friday, and he is now searching for another syndicator to pick up the three-hour program. He said the show was being heard on 56 stations across the country when he ended it, and that he is confident he'll be back on the air soon with someone else.

"I terminated the show," Hamblin said in a brief phone interview Tuesday. "For reasons of their inability to perform - financially - I can't work for nothing, won't do it."

Hamblin said Virginia-based American View had failed to show him a contract that could be "John Hancocked."

"After notifying them and warning them I wouldn't work for nothing, I canceled the show," he said.

American View representatives said Tuesday that it was true Hamblin's show with them was over and would not resume, but they would not comment on the dispute.

Hamblin also writes a syndicated newspaper column that appears in The Denver Post.

Hamblin gained national attention in the 1990s by styling himself as "the Black Avenger," an African-American columnist who would break from liberal expectations of his race by staking out conservative or independent positions on issues such as affirmative action, poverty, crime and national politics. Recently, for example, Hamblin's column decried liberal academics' support of the University of Michigan's racial- preference admission program awarding extra points to ethnic minorities. He called such affirmative action "racial discrimination, plain and clear."

Hamblin said he'll wait for a better contract but still desires national radio syndication after nine years of doing the show.

"I'm talking to some other people. ... Financially I could take a year off if I wanted to, but you don't want to be missing in action where radio is concerned."

I'm not sure if Hamblin is located in Denver now or not--I don't think we get the show in Denver but I could be wrong.

Yeah, he lives outside of Denver and does the show from home. I get (got) his show here in Durango, CO. Too bad. I really like his show and style. Have been a caller many times. Oh well, hope he gets back soon.

Confirm what, the broadcasting from his house or the sexual harassment?

For the former send Hamblin an email. My former shyster, who is also a CFI, gave Hamblin his check flight in 2001 and has been to his house, knows his wife, etc. They met at a Harley biker bar in Denver on Parker Road called the Piper Inn. For the latter contact Peter Boyles at KHOW radio in Denver who has detailed the story on his radio program. Name of the woman who was harassed was either Karen Trinidad or Susan Witkin. Boyles told the story, he was in attendance at the party, several years ago. Incident occurred prior to Hamblin being syndicated, which is why he is in syndication and broadcasts from his home. The whole thing never went to court as I believe the authorities never got involved. The woman got a settlement from the radio station and Hamblin got the boot. Some in the local black community tried to raise a stink about KOA being racist when he was canned but that quickly died down when details of why he was fired came out.

When did he go syndicated?

Wow! I knew he broadcasted from his house sometimes, but I never heard of the harassment...I have a total different view now. I thought he was more "straight-cut" king of guy.

Even if he was out-of-bounds at an office XMAS party, I still liked his take on lots
of current topics.
And some of his historical perspectives, such as terming his years in
the lovely urban environs of Detroit as his "tour of duty".

If nothing else, I hope he at least gets short guest gigs on TV to vent
on some of the more foolish events in the current landscape.

From Boyles account Hamblin was pretty tanked up when it occurred. Not that being drunk in public is an excuse for what happened. Had he been sober it probably wouldn't have occurred.

I did hear on my local station, that Ken spoke with a director, he said that he was sorry for the current events but he needed to get off the air and that his forthcomings did include men in black robes and attorneys.

He illegally took all of his tapes from the studio.
