India may lead Asian version of Nato

NEW DELHI: Pipping Pakistan as a main player in the region, United States is contemplating to establish an Asian version of the North Atalantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) putting India in a prominent position.

It is an apparent move to resuscitate the dormant concept of Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO). Pakistan had been a main player in the regional defence alliance, but is no more a choice of the USA to occupy the driving seat. The move is aimed at establishing an Asian version of the Nato, a defence arrangement to fill in the void created by the dissolution of the SEATO on June 30 1977.

On a recommendation from the Pentagon, the US administration plans to form a separate military alliance putting India in a prominent position compared to other Asian countries with an assurance of constructing a long-term strategic partnership with India to contain Washington's potential Asian adversaries, Pakistani daily The News reported from Brussels quoting a defence strategy report available in Europe.

Ever debilitating democratic deficit in Pakistan and country's failure to build sustainable democratic institutions over several decades has changed Washington's choice of the country expected to play the principal US ally in Asia, the paper said quoting the report.

The new Pentagon policy to achieve the US strategic interests in Asia is designed on the bases of the doctrine of outgoing US Ambassador to India, Robert Blackwill, who recommended the US administration "strengthen political, economic and military-to-military relations with those Asian states that share our democratic values and national interests”. “That spells India," the report said.

Chinese media, including The People's Daily and The Beijing Time have also taken note of Blackwill doctrine and reports on Pentagon's recommendation of establishing Asian version of the Nato, the paper said.

"In the eyes of the United States, India holds an important strategic position linking the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. By strengthening its ties with the South Asian country, the United States can not only consolidate and expand its strategic presence in South Asia but also further squeeze Russia's and China's strategic clout out of the region," the defence strategy report said.

According to the report, the decision on the prospects of a new security system in the shape of an Asian version of Nato was taken in a structured round of talks between Pentagon senior advisers and their New Delhi counterparts held in late May. This was followed up with several rounds of Indo-US talks on resuscitating the concept of SEATO through an Asian version of Nato.

Washington's basic purpose for closer ties with India by creating an Asian version of Nato is to extend its status as the world's sole superpower, the report underlined.

The report added that several SEATO-style US-India military exercises in near future would mark the preparations to materialise the plan to establish a Nato-type of military alliance in Asia.

The SEATO consisting of United States, Pakistan, Australia, Britain, France, New Zealand, the Philippines and Thailand held its final military exercise on February 20, 1976, one year before it came to an end.

About time though France may still be more interested in poking a finger in our eye than cooperating.

Then, with India nine of the ten toes would be present. And, most of these guys are east of Jerusalem. [tin-foil hats gentlemen]

A new NATO, good! The old original NATO was too pretentious. Leadership from India should avoid that problem.

Japan and Korea are in Northeast Asia. Southeast Asia is strategic in and of itself because of the narrow strait shipping routes from Europe and the Persian Gulf to and from Japan.

SEATO was an alliance against the "domino effect" which was thought to and in part did result from the communists unifying Viet Nam. The new alliance would, with India's participation, be more directed at China. Pakistan is a long time client of China and they will definitely also be on the outside looking in.

It would be interesting to see whether Indonesia and Malaysia become part of an alliance with India in effective opposition to fellow muslims in Pakistan. My bet is that Singapore plays a pivotal role in bringing this off and they have a lot to be concerned about with both those muslim states. The alliance would then be not only anti-Chinese but anti-Islamic as well. That certainly works for me.

In spite of my quips something big may be brewing here that may get rather significant.

You may have it right about Singapore, Malaysia, and Singapore, for there is some wealth there. Pakistan would be out, as would France.

And this would go against Islam and China. Interesting. Ver-r-r-y interesting.

I don't think Indonesia would join up, as Saudi sponsored Wahabiism has corrupted that country's earlier, peacefulIslam and now there seem to be militant slamofascists on the street there. And yeah, it is sponsored by Saudi Arabia-our so called ally.

Heard that! There are those who believe a horrific war will soon occur where up to 2/3 of the world's population will destroyed by an army of 200 thousand thousand.

That region of China, India, etc. has nearly 2/3 of the worlds population, and Chairman Mao some forty years ago claimed he could raise a two-hundred million man army which he could line up in ranks so many across and that army could never be machined-gunned down, for they could continue to replenish themselves. Moreover, Islam could perhaps raise an army that size. And, maybe with this new SEATO India, the P.I. and the others could raise a rather large army themselves. The tension, as you noted in Indonesia, is there.

TRue -- Japan and Korea are part of Asia, India actually is a separate continent -- keeping the same reasons for why Europe is a separate continent (separated by a mountain range and with a distinct culture), India is a separate continent distinct from Asia too.

Most likely the Alliance would be a Central powers Axis of Russia-India-Australia with Thailand, the Phillipines and Indo-China as allies too

Yeah, right. The Indians won't show up, if they do at all, until Iraq is fully stabilized and doing so won't result in a backlash from Indian Muslims.
