George Killen, former State Police Detective-Lieutenant, and chief of a never-revealed investigation, lamented that the failure to bring the case to a satisfactory conclusion was "the biggest mistake" of a long and distinguished police career. In her horrible and untimely death, Mary Jo Kopechne unwittingly and tragically performed a great service for this country: she made certain that Ted Kennedy would never become president of the United States. We all remember the senator lecturing us on what America would be like if Robert Bork were elevated to the Supreme Court -- well, it would not be anything like the ONE day when Senator Kennedy wore a neck brace, one month after the accident: the day of his court hearing! The brace (and his "injuries" that required it) disappeared the next day.

My how things have changed. The Kennedys would never get away with anything close to the Chappaquiddick cover up in 2003. I agree with the poster who stated that although it is tragic that Mary Jo Kopechne lost her life, her death prevented Fat Teddy from ever becoming President. However, the old drunk and his drunken son Patrick are still in government, living off the taxpayer, and finding ways to infringe on our freedom. I look forward to the day where the Kennedys finally leave politics forever, in disgrace.

That was Joseph Kennedy, the one-time candidate for the Mass. Govenor's job. He rolled the car while passing a tour bus on one of Nantucket Island's worst corners. He was, no doubt, yelling at the bus driver, "Do you know who I am?..."

The thing that sucks is that Pina was a Republican. Pina disappeared when the Foreman of the Grand Jury tried to contact him. The Idiot Foreman didn't realize he could have called the Grand Jury on his own authority and demanded the State Police get Pina, and then demanded that Pina investigate.

A Grand Jury can investigate any damned thing they please during their term and there isn't a (Real Bad Swear Word) a (Real Bad Swear Word) Judge can do but comply with an order to produce a witness.

I have an image of Michael Skakel sitting in the pokey fixating to the point of obsession the fact that Teddy got away with murder while he [Skakel] was convicted years and years after the fact.

If you listen you can almost hear the obession. "They won't convict me, my uncle was Robert Kennedy. Teddy got away with murder, William Kennedy Smith got away with rape, Joe walked when the girl was paralyzed. And cousin what's-his-name got away with boppin' the babysitter. I'll walk.

Howie did a live broadcast from the party cottage on Chappy in 1994. I think it was the 25th anniversary of Mary-Jo's death.

WRKO was actually able to rent it and they laid out a nice clambake for the occasion. Howie had all kinds of guests on to recount the event from the remote setup in the living room of the house Teddy and Paul Markham rented for the boiler room girls. It remains in my mind as the best program he's ever done.

It's been years since I've been out there on Chappy but I believe it's still standing and may be available for rent.
