Yes, he did and yes, it was a strawman.

Garrison made a splash as an abolitionist well before the Republican Party was founded, but he had no significant inluence in the GOP meriting a mention in such a concise history of a 150-year old political party.

The quote about ex-slaves being "mere serfs" is also form Phillips, I think (book not in front of me).

Inasmuch as you agree upon a standard of historical rigor, I prefer to say that, his arguments and actions elsewhere betray it as a strawman. Given that I know of no proof that it was a feint upon his part (such as letters or journal entries), that's the most we can say about it.

Lifetime appointments are not equivalents to Big government.

Veto of state laws may actually reduce the layers of government but has nothing to do with the size of the fedgov.

So his "plan" of government hardly "speaks for itself."

Other errors in your post include attributing to me a preference for life-time appointments to a "central government bureaucracy" whatever THAT is. And THIS admirer of Hamilton does not try and avoid any statement he ever made however, I do insist on accuracy and context, something that rarely accompanies his critics comments.

Hamilton referenced Madison's observation that man is "a compromising animal" as the determinate of his strategy at the convention and that his goal was to pitch the government as "high" as possible meaning as strong or "energetic" as possible. This is no secret and virtually all students of Hamilton (including his enemies) recognize it as true.

Much of the West east of the Mississippi was land claimed by Virginia and other states did the same. NY was big on land grants to soldiers. However, I was referring more to the land given the settlers of the trans-Mississippi West in the 19th century.

To return to Hamilton's "plan", the constitution of the United States can be said to be as much Hamilton's "plan" for government as much as it was any man's. No man did more to create it and have it ratified than Hamilton. No man did more to make the government it created work than Hamilton. Some nebulous and /or hypothetical "plan" of Hamilton means little when compared to the REAL Hamilton plan which begins " We the People of the United States...."

Now THAT'S a plan.

Actually, state courts were far more repressive to free speech than federal ones. After, Jefferson became president his crony, Clinton, initiated legal proceedings against a NY editor who criticized J. Under the dreaded Alien and Sedition Acts, truth was a defense under the NY (and other states' laws) it was not. Hamilton used that opportunity to argue for the defendent, his last great effort for freedom of the press (a 30 yr. fight of his). Though he lost the case the NY legislature was so impressed or embarrassed by his pleadings that it changed the law so that truth was a defense.

Democrat-Republicans became the Democrats; Federal-Republicans evolved into the Republicans. The term used by J's enemies was Democrats and it is more accurate.

Millions of Yankees did not fight in Southern armies, not even the rabid RATS. That was a pretty inept attempt at sophistry.

Still with the ludicrous claim that Black SOLDIERS fought, not orderlies, valets, bootblacks, teamsters, blacksmiths but SOLDIERS? The Slavers worst fear was Black men with Guns. What other ridiculous beliefs do you have?

Doesn't take a crystal ball or even much intelligence so recognize that there was no massive growth trend in either fedgov expenditures or employment prior to the Civil War. Even a retard could recognize that.

Lincoln BARELY won re-election? This is typical but is it a Lie or just ignorance? 212-21 seems to be a LANDSLIDE by any normal accounting of fact. Hilarious.

Shall I start correcting spelling now for those arguing against me? That would take up most of my time. But I appreciate that even a trivial "victory" over me makes your day.

Last I checked Kolbe wasn't in the senate

So why bring him up then? Your specious argument is that a so-called RINO is no different than a Democrat. Thats false on any number of levels, starting with who holds majority status in Congress.

That Mary Landrieu is a cute little filibuster aint she? What happened to the loyal southern Republican base in Louisiana on Dec 7th 2002? Too many football games on that day? Deer season just opened?

My guess is that sugar price subsidies are more important than a conservative judiciary down in the heart of dixie.

That graph illustrates the different educational levels affect on elistment. Well educated men generally don't join while those with less do and gain an opportunity to further their education.

Where does your buddy show that the southerners in the military support the Traitors of 1861?

If you write a review and post it for distribution, you ought to proofread your work. It suggests a hastily written piece.

Another howling absurdity. RATS were not going to vote to convict no matter how many Republicans did. Clinton stayed in office after the GOP impeached him because of RAT treachery. Typical RAT treachery and a typical dishonest diversion of RAT treachery by you.

Not sure - I looked at the current stats. I believe the report is from the FedGov. Are you questioning the report?

Gee, what a discovery. And the reason was because the Slaver Revolt forced that growth. The Slaver Revolt was not because of any growth in Federal power or change in policies. It in no way had ANYTHING to do with Liberty other that the "right" to deny that Liberty to slaves.
