(07-23) 11:23 PDT NEW YORK (AP) --
Shots rang out Wednesday afternoon at City Hall, sending reporters in the press room diving for cover beneath their desks.
The mayor was in his first floor office and was not harmed, said his spokesman, Edward Skyler.
The shots were fired shortly after 2 p.m., apparently on the second floor of the building in lower Manhattan. It was unclear if anyone was wounded when about a dozen shots rang out.
Police officers, including some in riot gear, were seen running across the plaza in front of the building once the shooting stopped. It was not immediately known if the shooter was in custody.
The City Council was holding a meeting on Wednesday, but it was unclear if the shooting was related to the session.

But NYC has some of the strictiest gun laws in teh nation this is not possible. You mean the law against killing people, and the law prohibiting handguns did NOT keep this criminal from shooting people? Not possible! We need more gun laws. If we outlaw guns this could never happen!

Was there a particular reason there were reporters there? Was a press conference in progress? There is a press room at City Hall, and the local media have reporters assigned to covering local government. So there are probably always some reporters in City hall during regualr business hours in case something comes up.
