CA: Why Davis is really in trouble

WHAT THE MEDIA observe firsthand during political wars, but often clean up when they report the news for public consumption, continually bemuses me.

Everything the opposing campaigns do from this moment forward will be in order to influence the polls as Gov. Gray Davis hurtles toward the first recall vote against a U.S. governor since the 1920s.

""This is just explosive stuff," says Democratic pundit and polling expert Pat Caddell of numerous findings the Times didn't publish. "It tells me the Democrats don't understand what they are facing -- recall support is broad, and we may be heading toward a huge turnout."

The turnout will be huge for another reason. Each declared and running candidate will have their own GOTV effort--not just the GOP but the Greens, Libertarians etc. Each and every one of those voters will vote "yes" on the first question. Many Rats will too. Methinks Grayout is toast for this reason alone...

"Gilliard hesitated. Clearly, it hadn't crossed anyone's mind to have a Spanish speaker.

Or could it be that Republicans do not identify people by their race, and see the need to have a special spokesman for black, hispanics, gays, lesbians, transgendered, or blondes?

Agree. I still think Arnold will get in at the last minute, perhaps when it's too late for Feinstein to jump in.

Kalifornians will jut replace one poltical whore with another. Their problems are far from over. For they are still Liberal Kalifornians at heart. (Present company excluded).

Let Kalifornia be an exmaple to Americas as to what would happen if the Socialist ever come to national power again.

Maybe, but I do think this is a continuing disconnect. You can trash the concept all you want, but it's stupid politics. In the 1800s, the big political machines always had Polish and German speakers for those communities that did not speak English---and history shows that Germans and Poles retained their native tongue far longer than most Hispanic immigrants. So the recall people would be smart to get on this.

Norm, Norm, Norm, nice piece????

Here's a person who sought to damn both parties instead of take the Democrats to task for running this state right into the ground. And what grounds did they use to slam Republicans, for not having a representative present who could give a presentation in a foreign language. J---- H. C-----, what nonsense.

Gray Davis, Bob Mulholland, and the Democrat controlled Legislature have take four years to put this state on the verge of insolvency. Thankfully the writer did have the smarts to mention that some of the Dems actually wanted to make the deficits even worse to manipulate the populace.

What bothers me, is that we are here by the devices of the Democrats, yet the media just can't quite grasp the fact that they deserve the blame, despite them being in control. What would it take for the media to simply state the facts? The Democrats have screwed this state right into the ground.

Nope, instead we get this mish mash of rotting banana peals and vegetables, that both parties are terrible. The idea is to create the attitude in the public of, "Aw who cares, they're both terrible."

Frankly it's this very type of reporting that got us into this mess. Instead of stating the facts about the budgets, deficits, hiring and Davis' and the Legislature's incompetence, we get this. Tidbits from blatherland...

"...and history shows that Germans and Poles retained their native tongue far longer than most Hispanic immigrants. So the recall people would be smart to get on this."

I dispute this. While it may be true that older immigrants may not have learned English to any real extent, the younger generations -- without fail -- became fluent in English quite quickly. On the other hand, there is a great number of hispanic immigrants who not only have not learned English, but refuse to do so, and that transcends generations. Moreover, virtually every immigrant to America embraced America and became Americans. For some peculiar reason, the only group that refuses to do this to any real extent is the hispanics, especially those from Mexico, whose allegiance is staunchly to Mexico and not to the U.S.

Republicans don't have a separate Spanish-speaking representative because they understand this is still one country and the language of that country is still English. Democrats, of course, hate this idea.

If the Hispanics want to be fully involved in the political process then they can learn English...just like MY ancestors had to do when THEY arrived here.

This actually IS a pretty good column, if read in full.

But if you only read the first few paragraphs, it's pretty bad, and many people read only the first few paragraphs.

I normally like Jill Stewart, and think she does a good service as someone straddling both sides. It means a wide range of people can focus on her ideas, not her prejudices.

And it WOULD be a good idea for the recall to have a spokesperson for the Hispanic media.

I just wish her interpretation of this wasn't so hostle. After all, the Recall people are about as far as you can get from the California GOP.

Did anyone see Caddel on Matthews when this all began? He said Dems weren't taking this seriously enough and it would come back to haunt them. He said Davis was, I'm paraphrasing, a rotten governor, and the recall would happen.

They laughed at him - wonder if Matthews will have him return?

Agreed. It was a good article. Read it in CalNews. before logging on to FR.

Mega Dittos on the Hispanic media. Getting the Latino vote would be the Dems worst nightmare, esp. in CA.
